Houdini...ish, kennels kennels kennels

So my dog needs a job. I have a bully and he is only 2 years old and he's a dog so he thinks kennels aren't a bedroom he thinks they are a challenge. I'm on my 4th kennel and needing a 5th and a STOUT chew toy that isn't harmful. Money isn't necessarily and issue but it doesn't grow on my walnut tree.
Down to the meat and taters...the steel bar kennels don't work, they are far too flimsy and I've been through two of them. He grabs the front door with his teeth and jerks back til the gate throws in the towel so I refuse to get one of those. I did have an igloo kennel and it was okay but it too faced the undisputed gate jerk. I bought a Great Choice kennel from pet smart and it lasted the longest because I could pull that gate back out of its inside and the lock pins would work still. Austin tired of this so he did what any dog made of muscle would do and chewed the bottom hole off for the lock pin. Currently my not so Great Choice kennel is mickey moused together with a ratchet strap....
I have looked into Smith Built crates and the Carry My Dog crates and several others that are in the same league and wanted to see if anyone else has tried anything like the kennel in the picture and had success.
Austin doesn't chew stuff up when he's out of his crate he just chews on his raw hides (one a day) and takes naps. But soon im gonna have a newborn running around and Austin won't be allowed in the bed with my wife at times. Sorry for the short story but I just wanted to trade you entertainment for your time
Thank you!

I'm sorry your dog is Houdini, but that post was funny.
Try exercising the heck out of him before crating him.
I think if that top one is steel then it should hold up to your super dog.
I had a Houdini foster once. Zip ties and climbing clips helped that poor bent crate survive.

He is sneaky! Sorry for my late reply, it's been a busy busy week! I had a ratchet strap holding the door on today while we went to a Christmas dinner and when we got back he greeted us at the front door!

Funny story. Hubs and I are sound asleep in bed with Ciara when at 130 this am I awaken to the hallway motion sensor light going off. Next thing I know Nala is in bed with us!!!! I must not have closed her crate all the way and she must be quite a little sneak herself because Kaos never made a sound! Hubs is very partial to Nala (in his defense Kaos is a total mamas boy and there just is no separating me and Ciara) so Nala got to sleep in the big bed with us and Ciara for the rest of the night. Sneaky pups!

The latch on this one has kept my new dog in 100% of the time. It has to be latched completely, but it does work. And she has an athletic build. She can escape standard metal crates and even the other type of plastic kennels.

Thanks for the link Ecko, I'll check it out. We have determined that the bottom hook (she has the crate that pulls up to release from the top - I hate it but it's what we could get at the time) on the crate doesn't always catch and Nala has learned to stick her nose in there and lift to open the crate. As far as we know, she can't open it when it's completely secure so we will just have to be extra careful to make sure it's secure when she's crated, especially if we are going out. I will say she was a very good girl once she escaped. She came right upstairs (as far as we know), she left no messes, and crawled right into bed and went back to sleep. She's a good sleeper and loves to cuddle so she cuddled right up to me and Ciara and back to sleep we went. I will definitely keep this in mind should she figure out how to use her thumbs and open the fully secure crate!

That's the EXACT crate Nala escaped from!! We have found that the bottom 'hooks' don't always catch and she has figured out that if she sticks her nose down there and pushes she gets enough room to lift the crate door up and open the door! She's such a mischievous little girl!

Dang! Indie is the worst escape artist ever, so I hope she never figures that out! I have, however, locked the kiddos out of the crate (they like to let the dogs loose all the time!) using a small carabiner on the top of the door, to keep it from opening. Maybe you can do that when you're leaving her in it for an extended amount of time?

I think we're good as long as we're careful and make sure the bottom catches but otherwise I will definitely keep that in mind for the future if necessary. Thanks for a great idea!

Nala strikes again

Naughty Nala! This girl seriously needs to get a job as an escape artist. The last few days have been gorgeous outside and all three stooges have spent a large majority of the days in the yard horsing around with no problems. Today, I left her and Kaos in the yard for a short period of time while I pottied and changed the laundry. I mean like 20-30 minutes tops. When I got back out there, she had managed to pull down the wire mesh change we had zip tied to the gate (her escape hatch) and dug herself out again! She was running the fence with Kaos, who proceeded to sneak past me when I opened the door to get Nala. I didn't pay much mind to Kaos as his recall has been excellent and he never strays far while Nala will wander the entire area if we let her. I walk out into the street and see her down the end of the street playing with all the kids that were home from school. I crouched down and called her and for the first time ever, she ran to me when called! When she got close she tried to hop around and play the chase me game but I stayed where I was and she came over after she realized I wasn't going to be baited. She got TONS of praise for coming. So I pick her up and go walking through the yard to take her in and there's Kaos in the front yard jumping and acting a fool to try and get Nala to play with him. In they both went. Sigh, we've decided we are just going to replace the entire gate since it's warped so bad and with the pups being 8 mos and about 45 lbs now there is not much hope left that they will grow to the point of her not escaping....

Here's her latest escape hatch:

Keep your fingers crossed that Kaos doesn't figure out how to jump the fence since our little leaper can jump as high as the fence now!

Cheza will pry the bars apart with her mouth until she finds a space big enough to escape, even with all of the edges and door zip tied. And she's walked every morning before being crated.

Oh no! Might be time for a chain spot. Even if it's just one for Nala.

Yeah Ecko I think you might be right. I think I will actually get both pups acquainted with a chain spot. Kaos isn't escaping but watching him jump I'm afraid he's going to jump the fence before too long. He's not adventurous like Nala and doesn't wonder off but I'd still rather be safe than sorry.
