Not Sure if I should crop my pup's ears?

So i'm deciding if I want to crop my pup's ears because I think they'll look better when he's older. However, i'm torn because I don't want to put him through any *unnecessary* pain. I'm just wondering if anyone has been in the same position? If so, how did you decide? He'll be a little bit over three months old if I decide to crop them (not sure if this is too late.. if anyone could shed some light on this?). Also I don't want a super short crop it would only be a little bit of his ear (medium/show crop)... I just need a little bit more persuading/insight if i'm gonna put my baby through that pain lol. Also if anyone has any recommendations of vets that will crop for a decent price in New Jersey please feel free to let me know!

thanks!

Hi there NJBully. There are a lot of people here who have cropped their dogs ears. If you pick the right doctor, which I implore you to do your research there, there shouldn't be a lot of pain involved for your pup. Ear cropping is as much an art form as it is a science so having the right doctor really is the most important thing. I haven't cropped the ears of any of mine but we did want to do the pups. It just never worked out money wise but we did find the perfect doctor. We do want a shorter cut so we could technically do it later if we so decide but it's doubtful at this point. I am afraid to say, that from my understanding, it is too late to do a medium crop on your pup. Those types of crops need to be done early, like around 8 weeks or so, in order to train the ears to stand up. Once they grow past that stage, the ears have form more and may not stand up the way you want them to. A shorter crop doesn't require the ears to stand like that so it can be done later in life. I am positive someone with more experience will correct me if I'm wrong but that is my understanding of it.

Thanks for your response Jess,

I think I will probably do it and of course put the time into researching and finding a good vet. As for the age, that's a bummer.. I really wanted a show crop. I've read on other forums that "they wont stand up after a certain age" is a myth. However, I've also read the opposite (as you were saying) lol. I just wanted to get a better understanding from some of the members here and what they've experienced with ear crops at around 3 months. I will probably ask my vet about this but if anyone else has input it'd be appreciated!

thanks again

The one vet we researched told us they won't do any crops after 8 weeks because they may not "stand up right"? I'm not totally sure to be honest but that's just my understanding. I know there are people here who will chime in with more experience than I. Good luck and please share pics if/when you do decide to crop!

I believe 12 weeks is still young enough. But you're def running out of time quickly. You will need to post and massage to make them stand. Call around and ask if any vets have a portfolio. You can also contact local kennels of breeds who's ears get cropped and ask where they have them done at. Then narrow it down from there.
The reason you wouldn't do it when their older is because the cartilage has already developed it's shape and is set where it is. Some vets will do a battle crop on older dogs because it's wicked short and cartilage development is something that can be cut around. But older dogs tend take more time to heal and handle it differently.

I used Millstone AH, which is near Six Flags. She does a lot of show dogs, and her price is very reasonable. I would recommend her if you decide to do it.

That's good to know Indie since I know both of your dogs that are cropped look great. Hubs finally gave up on doing Kaos and Nala. I know we can still do them but they're quickly approaching a year old now and outside of what we do with them here won't be doing any competing. He has said that he does want to spend the money to go through a proper breeder for a dog to show/compete with when it's time to get our next dog in a few years. Hey maybe we'll be able to get a Rhodie pup down the line if you decide to breed him! ?

Once he's titled and health tested, he would be open to stud to approved females of equal caliber. Assuming he turns out as nice as I hope! I'd definitely keep you on the short list of potential owners.

I do have an adult female available for show/performance right now. She's Indie's niece. I just don't have the time for her right now, and Indie pretty much hates her since the puppies. :/
