Are Winter Coats and Sweaters necessary?

Hi everyone! This is my first winter with my 1 year old pit mix. We live in Chicago. Are winter/sweaters necessary? I know we humans tend to project our needs and concerns onto our pets. My dog is a housepet. Stays inside except for our 4 walks (ranging from 40 min - 1 hour). Am I spoiling my dog by having him wear clothes? Or are winter clothes justifiable? I do notice when he?s wearing a fleece in the cold that he?s a little more focused and acts the way he usually acts on a walk. Without one he tends to rush and tries to run home. But maybe he should just get used to the cold?

Hello BiboGirl! IMO, it is a personal preference. My dogs are inside the house dogs and I have never put clothes or boots on them. Also, they never go out by themselves, I am always with them when they go outside to do their business so they are not out in the cold for any long time. When we get too deep of snow I shovel a section of the yard for them to walk around in.
There are some here that do the coat and boots and that's fine if they want to but I have lived in Chicago my entire life and have had dogs my entire life, not one of them ever suffered frostbite. So it is your choice but with you having an inside dog I don't feel it's necessary where we live.

Hey there BiboGirl. I'm in PA where it's not quite as cold as Chi town (THANKFULLY) but my two DO where coats/sweaters. They DO NOT like the cold at all and love to be under blankets even in the dead of summer. They both love their coats and now won't go outside without them. I have lighter fleece ones and heavier winter/water proof ones for snow/rain. I use Mushers Secret on their feet as suggested by EckoMac and that works well for wet or hot conditions to protect their feet. It's like a wax salve and my male is much happier with it. Kaos does not like having his feet wet so he is much happier with some protection. Nala, my female, could care less about her feet but loves her coat and sometimes doesn't want it off when we come in, though I always take it off inside. Their coats & salve make their walks easier and more comfortable for them though I tend to not keep them out too long when the weather is extreme, hot or cold.

I'm not into dressing them for fashion or anything like that my two are prone to being cold and are much happier. Nothing wrong with making their coats cute if they're going to wear them anyway thought So as Joe pointed out, it is a preference thing, especially with inside dogs but I have found my dogs to be much more comfortable with sweaters/coats when outside.

Get a coat. All of mine have coats, whether or not they're inside or out. I get mine from Chick's Saddlery. Great coats for cheap.

I second Chick's Saddlery. As per Indies recommendation, I got my winter/waterproof coats there for a GREAT price and they are high quality.

My dogs wear coats. Albeit it's not that cold here too often as we're in FL. But my bulls hate the cold since they're FL born dogs. If it's 60 or less, they get them for potty breaks. Otherwise it's just for walks.

Don't be jelly that I'm in FL. 60 is cold for dogs who's AC doesn't drop below 70. LOL!

ps. They use blankets under 75 degrees. Born and raised in the sweltering heat makes for extremely cold sensitive dogs.

i just ordered my boy's first jumpsuit warmer. we have used raincoats in the past. but never a sweater. after rehabbing a ccl tear, he has some arthritis developing and i think it will help during early morning walks.

Never put sweaters, coats, booties etc on any of my dogs. Mine do just fine outside and I live in one of the snowiest cities in the USA. Just a personal preference of the owner really. They already got already fur coats on.

That particular dog in the photo was born in Florida and spent his first 5 years there. He has spent the last 3 years up north on my yard and does just fine come winter time.

Most of us have pets, not working dogs. And very few are game bred. Dogs like yours tend to handle more and complain less. My dogs are soft curs. They can have jackets and blankets when they're cold.

Yep I?ll admit I?ll jelly of anyone who lives in warmer climates. I like the fall but this winter stuff and snow are for the birds.

While I think that dogs can be acclimated to different climates and not NEED a sweater/coat I also think that there?s nothing wrong with giving them one if they are clearly uncomfortable like my mutts and Ecko & Cheza are.

I?m also jelly of AGK and his game bred working dogs as I had hoped to raise one myself prior to the drastic change in circumstances. However, I do agree with Mac that these dogs can take a lot more and whine a lot less about it.

At the end of the day, I prefer to see my mutts comfortable and warm. Though they may not be FL bred and raised, they do not like the cold and are much happier and comfortable in their coats and sweaters. I see nothing wrong with that and don?t think that makes my dogs ?soft? (though they are) or me a ?dog mom?.

Thanks everyone! I decided to stick with the fleece so that he would want to stay outside and walk longer on really cold days. I'm going to get him some booties for sure because city de-icer used on roads can be toxic and who knows what the neighbors use. Since he's out on the sidewalks at least 3 hours a day I think boots will be more important than the jacket. I just don't know which ones to get.
