Hello all & information / suggestions / opinions request

Greetings everybody. This is my first post.

I am originally from Romania, and the views on dog ownership are (still - who knows how much longer) VERY different than general American views on ownership.

My family has owned dogs and cats since as long as I can remember -
mostly guard dogs, working dogs and mutts, but I am more than somewhat
familiar with dog behavior and psychology. There is so much
information out there, or more accurately, so much disinformation -
myths, outright lies and inaccuracies, that I am left at wits end and
with no other option than to reach out to you for help.

I have recently acquired a puppy from friends of friends who were no
longer able to care for it. The puppy was going to end up in a shelter
so my girlfriend and I suggested we adopt the puppy as an alternative.
This puppy might be the best dog I've owned or known so far. She is
approximately 5 months old (the previous owners were very ambiguous,
the vet said about 5 months) very smart, low energy, obedient,
beautiful. I have nothing but praise for her. But: I have a few
concerns:

- she sleeps more than 18 hours a day. We take her to the dog beach
for 1h or 1.5hrs every day (weather permitting) - and she usually goes
on a 30 - 45 min walk in the morning and another at night. Other than
than, she may play with her squeaky toys but not excessively so - she
sleeps a LOT. The vet gave her a clean bill of health so it's probably
not a medical condition. Is this normal?
- she rests with frog legs, that is, her hind legs extend to the side
and back, often all the way back - imagine her hind legs and body
expressing a 180 degree angle - a straight line. Is this normal?
- she doesn't bark. She's very very quiet. Sometimes at the dog beach
when she's trying to coax another dog into play she will bark her
puppy bark but normally she is extremely quiet. Is this normal?
- she doesn't grip. She sometimes plays tug of war with other dogs
but never with me. She will try to nip at me sometimes, but not overly
so.
- she's generally not interested in playing with us. She mostly wants
to sleep on us or just hang out.
- she's a very fussy eater. I put her on a raw diet - protein,
oatmeal, veggies, cottage cheese and oil. I rotate the oils
(sunflower, olive, fish) and protein source (chicken, turkey, ground
beef, tofu) every few days but she's very very picky.
- she's not very muscular.

Finally, you're probably asking yourself why am posting here with these concerns? I am doing so because we (as well as the previous
owners and the vet) believe that she's a pit bull but obviously from
my issues above her persona and behavior are VERY unlike a pit bull.

I am attaching photos of Coco for your consideration.

Please let me know what you think.

Thank you kindly for your help.

We suspected as much but like I mentioned in the original post, the information we received is conflicting / inaccurate. The previous owners and one of the vets said she's ABPT but she's quite unlike an ABPT.

This doesn't make me love her any less, I just want to know what's going on with her.

And she IS very fast, if she's not too lazy to run.

Well, to be honest I don't think you need to worry to much. One thing about pitbulls sometimes is they can be very active one moment, and then become a complete couch potato.

Our 4 month old puppy is very similar to how you describe yours. At the park or around people she becomes very active and friendly. The only time she barks is when she wants to play with our cat or other dogs around. When we come home she lays down, sometimes just plays with her toys and becomes a couch potato.

It sounds to me like she is getting her exercise. Have you tried encouraging her to play? My 6 year will take the puppies toy and call her, then we she comes up to him she will sit and wait for my son to throw it. She then runs and picks up the toy and brings it back. You could always get her temperment asseted.....

Maybe you just have a very calm dog, and you can embrace that. I'm sure others here will post also with more experience to. I'm also sure that once she hits puberty her temperment could change also.

i wouldnt worry to much my last apbt was a couch & cartoons kinda dog for all 10yrs of his life ... I now own a 1yr old who is very high in prey drive ... and play when outdoors or im up for play in my apt ... these last 4 days i was home due to gum surgery and even with all his energy he preferred to sleep hours at a time with me since i was in and out of sleep due to pain meds ... and even while online the entire time from bed he was still right there ... long as shes vet checked and stated healthy i think not to worry ... jmo ... enjoy her and good luck ...

Each dog is different. You can not say that she is unlike a pitbull just because she is not attacking everything in sight.

You can build up stamina if you really want to. Once you get her into that high energry state there is no going back to lazy days.

My dog Vendetta would only play fetch and run around for about 2 hrs when she was 4-5 months old now at 11 months she needs about 4-5 hrs of excerise a day. I'm lucky I have a teenage boy that helps me as I work full time.

Vendetta never barks unless the wolves are close. Mikado never barked either he made noises but did not bark. My sons APBt Stevie Rae she barks. Vendetta is also a picky eater that is why I don't do raw diet with her. Chalice was also picky turned up her nose at turkey meat :O.

I wouldn't worry about your girl. She sounds fine.

Hi there,
Your pup looks good to me. Looks purebred too. However, there is only one way to tell if you have a pure pit bull, and that is illegal. I have seen APBTS with papers that were pure Jeep, and they were furry. LOL!
Anyway, each dog has their own personality, especially different bloodlines. Dogs can also need time to adjust to a new situation/home/owner. As a dog matures, sometimes the energy level goes up, or down. Once the dog gets used to going different places and seeing different things, it may gain more energy.
Sounds like a good pet to me.

very cute dog. i do not think she looks pure apbt though. about how old is she? some apbts do not exactly fit breed traits. Usually apbts are very active and wear out owners. but some just like to chill. if dogs are mixed that usually has a lot to do with personality that doesnt exactly fit one breed. especiall with dogs that have 3 or more breeds in them.but i find dogs usually mixed with apbts are usually active breeds as well. maybe she needs a little more time to come out of her shell. maybe this is her set personality. As for the only barking at other dogs, this is not odd. my older apbt Onyx will not bark at all unless i tell him to speak or if he is playing.i did not teach him to never bark. he was just always like that.if she is from a shelter you might not know the complete story of her life. maybe a former ownership made her behave like this. I am sure you will get a better idea of who she is when she gets older. My boy Onyx is almost 2 but i can read him like a childrens book. i can always tell you what he is going to do right b4 he does it. Ne ways congrats on the pup and good luck!

See, that's the problem with "pits". Even people who own them can't identify a dog as apbt or mixed. She is what she is. Her behavior may change quickly when she adjusts to you. as far as laying with frog legs, I have a couple who sleep like that. I think I would put kibble out for her and if she doesn't eat it after 15 minutes pick it up. Keep doing this until she eats. Her nature will not allow her to starve when there is food available. This sometimes works to allow the dog to quit being a picky eater. Of course, you have to have the strength to do this. Keep plenty of fresh water out for her and the kibble.
