38lbs at 5 months old!

I know its kinda late but i took Mandingo to his first vet visit yesterday (a day before his bday) and he weighed in at a whooping 38lbs at 5 months.

I still cant believe it especially since i have a strict feeding schedule.

2 meals a day. 1 cup of red meat evo each meal.

I wouldn't be feeding a puppy EVO. It's too rich for puppies. He needs puppy food or an all stages diet.

totally agree, you need the pup grow slow to avoid joint issues. I feed canidae all life stages which has 24% protein and a table spoon of plain yogurt. I was alarmed by how fast my pup was growing so I removed the boiled chicken out of his diet for that reason.

I agree, and you also need to make sure that he is getting a lot of exercise bc the higher the protein you feed the higher there activity level needs to be or it can be bad for their liver.

At such an early age the exercise shouldn't be in such volumes. The puppies need lots of rest to grow healthy and to repair their bodies after playing. They should be allowed to play freely but also stopped so they can rest. Too much exercise is bad for puppies.

Sorry I guess I didnt exactly state what I meant clearly. I was agreeing that this food is too rich for puppies but also saying that a dog who is on that food should have high activity levels because of its high protein content. In case the original poster decided to take the puppy off of it but use it again when the dog is older.

dog food and exercise

From the point of view of the most honest vets all dry commercialized food is the same; They advise their science diet of course, but unless you get a specialized formula its just as much filler as any other. I am a canine behavior specialist, with 7 years in wolf rescue coupled with 7 years vet tech experience, and 10 years breeding and hunting with game bred bulldogs. LIKE ALL THINGS COMMERCIAL its a ploy to make money. Its both cheeper and better for your animal to feed it the equivelant of what it would sustain itself on in the wild. You may see wild dogs gorge but they will go puke it up for others even house dogs are known to gorge on kibble and hurl it up later. A dogs stomach is roughly 2/3's the size of the skull without the muzzle. SO for all of us who hunt and fish, not for sport, but as a way of life this is easily done. I have raised my entire line off of big game and fish, using bil jacs frozen food from time to time as well as any general 26% food or better this was generally only through summer months when ran out of meat. Bear and Elk meat is awesome and works great.. But I suppose beef scraps from the butcher with uncooked bones is sufficient for the city dwellers. My dogs have no problems health wise or mentality wise from eating raw meat, and they convert over to what ever diet plan the owners have used with no problem. Thats the way their gut is designed to digest. Dog men who hunt bear all over up north here as do myself feed raw meat, its because it actually sustains the animal better than kibble of any sort. The animal can perform longer stronger faster. Its like us and our food which was originally designed as rations for the millitary in WWII and Korea, it will get us by. Does that makes sense? Ultimatley just because a dog grows fast doesn't mean it will be big, thats the case with my line, they are grown by 8 months. Some are 25lbs and some get to 75lbs all off the same heavy jocko stock. I am retired and do not sell dogs. I only breed to keep my stock alive most I dont keep go to ranches or farmland, as I hunt and run dogs on coyotes. A long night of running coyotes is good activity for these dogs. I have a kill dog who wastes no time flippin a yote' and puttin him to sleep, just like a big cat, she doest it without breaking skin shes stopin the blood flow through the jugular, cuz she knows the yote is food I think. Shes been my prize so far in 10 year. When a pup is big enough to tag along I take em' along. As far as exercise I use a work out regiment of gamedog men, bear and secrets of some mushers, but only after the dog is no less than one year to insure the dogs mature enough.
Opinions vary... This is what worked for me.

Not trying to pick a fight, but BTKs Cochise is NOT a bully, he's a perfect Am Staff. Also, Evo red meat is awesome, for an adult dog. It's not a 3 stage, you're over loading your puppy with protein, youre looking at bone deformities and improper muscle growth. You should allow your puppy to put on some weight, strict diet is not needed at this age, you should really relax until he's larger and then cut down. JMO
