Ugh!! A co-workers irresponsibility!!

So I work with a few guys that also have APBTs. They all show me pics of theirs and of course I gush over mine all the time. Anyway, a few weeks ago one of the guys tells me "oh yeah my pit and my other dog (a golden or lab cant remember) got into a bad fight I had to break them up". So of course I ask if they are ok and what he plans on doing to keep it from happening again... He then tells me "oh it was just a scuffel they are fine and what do mean what am I gonna do?"
So I try and drop hints that he should have already been separating them unless supervised but now it is even more important and that he should start separating them for most of their time if not all of the time. He of course gets all defensive and argumentative so I let it be.
Well today he brings his dog (lab or golden whichever) in with him because it has to go to the vet. Why? Because it got into it again with his pit and let me tell you it ripped into this poor dog. So I freak and I am looking her over cause her wounds are very infected and the whole side of her face is swollen! When I ask him what happened he says "Oh she just pi'd him off again, she tried to get in his food bowl" What?!!!! You have got to be f&*$ing kidding me. So of course my first reaction is " You feed them together?" He says no he just leaves food out. So at this point I had to walk away before I lit him up.
So now hes going to take this dog to the vet and the vet is going to have to report the pit and the pit will be deemed a vicious dog! All because he isnt being a responsible owner and he fed them together!
I would love to just go off on him but it wouldnt do any good and its my workplace but I dont even know if I can stay calm enough to try and talk some reason into him.

As far as I am concerned he shouldnt have dogs!!

Like we say time and time again some ppl should not have this kind of breed and this is why, this is a perfect example of why. For the fact that he does not even know the basics of having this breed makes me sick to my stomach. The fact of the matter is that this was an accident waiting to happen from the begging and thank god it was at his house. I have had my dog get into a bad scuffle with other of my own dogs at home but I would never report it because I know what the outcome would be. It will become more costly for him even with his home insurance if he has a house.. Dumb ignorant clueless ppl that should not own this breed because they simply do not have common since. Having this dog means that you need to learn to maintain this breed that’s why us the responsible owners found this site to learn of each other and better the breed not diminish it. You should give him this site!

I gave him this site long ago when he told me about the dog being aggressive with his other dog. I have mentioned many times that he needs to separate the dogs at all times if possible and only have them together if they behave while under strict supervision.

On another note, if your dogs get into a scuffle at all its the owners fault. You said you wouldnt report it. What would you in the case of one of your dogs being badly injured? Avoid vet care cause the vet would report the incident? Thats not being real responsible either.

Bottom line is being a responsible owner means keeping your dog completely out of these instances!!

I totally agree with youÖ It is all on the owners but it does tend to happen more with this breed then others of course. The mishap should teach any pitbull owner to try to keep this accident from happening ever again. But then again I agree with 100% itís all on the owner, there are time that you need to sit on the sidelines and let the person self destruct in order for them to learn and reconstruct. I guess if you already tried to help there is not much else you could do but sit there and see it happened. Itís a very sad story over all and all because of the incompetence of an owner that does not know it all and all could be fixed if learned and use the rite methods. I feel sorry for the dogs and I feel your frustration on this subject and IMO he should not own any dog for the most part.

Where do you live that a vet would report a dog fight between two dogs? Here if it happens the vet takes of the dog or will even give meds over the counter no one is reported. Fights happen even to the best of us. Now if the dog bite a human then yes it would reported.

Sounds like this guy is underthe impression that it is all in how you raise your dogs. People need to understand that all APBT have the ablitiy to be DA it is in their nature. Maybe that is how you need to educate him. Talk to him about DA and HA the differance between them and how to avoid altercations.

Believe me I have talked to him. He is (I realised this talking to him about 10 minutes ago) one of those well my dog is just tough and if another dog messes with him then they are gonna get theirs even if it is my other dog. This dog is definitely a status for him.

Anyway, it doesnt matter because he had the dog put down this morning. I was unaware of that when we first talked. And he only had it put down because he thought it might go after his kids next.

It just pisses me off!!

And yes in the county I live in in Idaho a vet has to report if they work on a dog that has been attacked by another dog because if it going back to the same home with the same dog that attacked it that is considered to be abuse and consentual dog fighting which became a felony here last year I believe.

It is a shame that the dog is dead. Poor thing never had a chance in that home. Hopefully he will not get another pitbull or if he does he does his research first.

I told him how disappointed I was with his situation and that even though his dog developed DA that it is not likely that it would have gone after one of his kids. Also, I nonchalantly asked him if he thought he might get another Pit and he said never that they are the worst dogs ever. In a way its good he wont have another one but on the same note we dont need anymore people against the breed either. Its a catch 22 and very sad.

But one of the other guys that has two pits here also said to me that I shouldnt be worried about someone elses dogs and that his have fights all the time... UGH does it ever end?

Actually it is sad to hear but it is kind of good thing for both to part ways. It is true though the fella did not even stand a chance in that house hold and could of ended worst then what really happened. He could of taken the dog to a dog park, at this point this guy did not care or knew a dam thing about this breed which he had in his own home. Itís sad but as long as any pitbull owner that does not take the time to really learn about the breed and learn how to better it and work with it in my IMO does not stand a chance unless raised with this breed. Give the web site to you other friends it sound like he I headed the same way, might as well learn from someone else mistake.

I did give him the site and offered to help with the training of his dogs... I also offered up a kennel so that he can crate and rotate... He bit the bait so we may see him on here shortly...

thats really messed up but truth is i seen alot growing up and still do now. People who get pits for status, over breeding, or just ignorance. They dont do their home work and think aww this is like a regular dog, I've owned all types of dogs and yes they are all different but pits are "special" and I mean that in a good way but they are a handfull if you do not know them or their breed. I think instead of always putting down animals (euthenasia) there are people on this earth that also need that treatment.. Hopefully the other genius with the 2 pits will listen and not think like this "mo" did...
