Breaksticks

Hey, I wanted to see how many ppl own a breakstick or even know what one is....I personally own a few and through experience have learned the importance. I feel everyone that owns an apbt or bully should own a breakstick. i know its considered paraphanelia (sp?) in some areas but when used i believe it can possibly save a dogs life and atleast make what could have been a terrible situation a little less tragic.......If this has been discussed befor I apologize but there seems to be a lot of ppl new to this breed that might be educated by this thread.

Aren't they used for prying apart the jaws if they get into a fight, right? I don't own won becasue when I was researching they said as long as you have a stick that is not going to snap its the same thing. Do you not think so?

I have several... I have one in the vehicles, and a couple in the dog room.. Any APBT owner should have a breaking stick and KNOW how to use it properly.

A stick that won't break could work, but the idea of having a breaking stick is to protect your dog from getting hurt, to get the dogs apart quickly and with the least amount of damage. A random "strong" stick can snap off in their mouth, but splinters in their mouth or just not be where you think it was yesterday when you need it. There are plenty of people that make and sell breaking sticks.

In most places it is considered "fighting" equipment, but its really a safety issue. To not have and know how to use a breaking stick is completely irresponsible in my book. And that includes all types of APBTS.

I don;t own one...However since Bruno does play with an older male pitbull, perhaps I should think about having one, just in case.
But I hear you can use a tent stake.

I own a few and actually had my first experience using one the other day. Usually I just choke out with collars, but in this instance -- one dog grabbed another under a fence and there was only one hold to break -- I could tell the stick was going to be the best bet. I highly recommend having them, but I also recommend knowing how to break up a fight without them. Most of the time I rush in and grab collars rather than grab a breaking stick. It helps if you can get a door or a gate between the combatants, presuming the fight breaks out at home.

I bought one a long time ago after I had the pleasure of going in one of my dogs mouth to get him off another animal I used my finger and broke a nail didn't get bit lucky me but it was a risky move had no choice at the time I was clueless and didn't know what a parting stick or break stick was. Long story short they are all over my house and anywhere my dogs go they go to. It's a must have tool and every responsible bulldog owner should have one and know how to properly use one.

Anyone who owns an APBT should own a break stick. I own several and make my own. Its relatively easy to make. You can make them out of anything, I like using small axe handles and several can be made from one sheet of the plastic cutting boards.

I purchased one after my Mastiff blindsided my APBT and had to choke them out because neither one was willing to give up. Ugly,Ugly scene and I learned the hard way. You must also know you can only use it on a bully.

Question: How old does your dog have to be to be able to use a breaking stick? I'm sure the answer would be something along the lines of "as soon as you get your dog, get a breaking stick" haha, I'm just curious is all.

Whitman is about 7 months now, and I was planning on either making or buying some to keep at my house, in my truck and at my girlfriend's house. Figured I'd get them before he turned a year, so within the next few months. Would that be ok?

Here's a good video on how to use one:

I do not own one, but before I get my next dog I will.

I have one with me at all time in my purse training bad car ect, even when I bring my sisters golden retriever to the dog park i keep one in my dogpark bag for that just in case an irresponsible owner comes and can't handle the situation themselves.

That video is great I was so happy when I found that on youtube

Thank you very much for the video DarkMoon! I have read about how to break up a dog fight and using breaking sticks, but haven't actually seen it done.
