Fatboy and Hera are on a crate and rotate so they go whenever they're outside and aren't in their crates long enough to have to tell me when they have to go out.
Pretty Girl will not let me know at all when she has to go.But she won't go in the house either. She just holds it.And has held it for hours and hours on end before when a emergency arose and I had to be away from the house for 15 plus hours.
I think since she's been house broken she's gone in the house maybe 4 times in her 4 plus years. And that was because I had switched her food and was then away to not be able to take her out or she was sick for some reason

Beastley expects the sliding door to be open all the time so he can come and go. It's cold in Ohio and he gets mad when we close the sliding glass door and will pace back n forth and yowl until it is reopened. It has to be opened at least enough for him to get his nose in to open it himself. I need to teach him to close it when he is done. Talk about high gas bill. Fatboy will get in your face and pant like he is hyperventilating and we say "shoo shoo poopoo tinkies?" and he jumps up and runs to the door. He wants you to wait at the door until he is finished then runs back in.

In the last couple of weeks, I've noticed that he's learned a more effective way to get my attention.

I house-sit for this lady and her two horses, a barn cat, two dogs (now just one, RIP Riley ), and her koi fish. She lets me take Kane with me since she wants me to stay at her house to watch it. Well, her dog Riley had kidney issues so he ALWAYS had to go pee (seriously, he needed to go out ~every 20-30 mins) and the way he'd let you know is to walk right up to your face and stare at you.

Now this is a 100lb, rather dopey-looking doberman staring at you and licking the drool off his mouth at literally an inch from your face.

So what is Kane doing???

Getting even CLOSER than Riley used to and staring me in the face, lol. Kane's NOSE literally touches mine and although he doesn't stare at me directly, he'll keep glancing at me out of the corner of his eyes. DO YOU SEE ME, DO YOU SEE ME, SHOULD I GET CLOSER?

"Kane. Do you have to go outside?"

YESYESYES, I'LL LICK YOUR NOSE AND THEN WE CAN GO OUTSIDE, YES.

lol.

So how do your dogs let you know??

Most of my dogs pace back forth...but my Bears will put his nose right on my face too.

Gargamel does the same, stare at you intently until you ask if he needs the bathroom, then he does circles and goes to the door. lol. I used to take him on a schedule, but he would not go sometimes so I didnt want him to be confused when I would ask if he had to go, so now I wait. although he has not asked to go out got like 14 hours sometimes, I am like he MUST have to go and take him out. Never ever any accidents though!

Argos rings a little bell, like what you'd see on the counter at a doctor's office. Little domed number with a button on top.

Before I taught him to use the bell, he'd just pace around until I got the hint, but the bell trick has worked marvelously. Only problem is, he rings it WAY more often than he really needs to, like if he hears my neighbor and his dog outside. I can usually tell when he really needs to go though, cause he'll ring the bell and walk back across the apartment to look at me, then ring again, then look, then ring, etc.

Haha this is a funny thread hearing what everyones dogs do,
Apollo will walk up to the slider stare outside for a minute, and if I'm in the room he will make one little brief wimp like 1 second long its just enought so I look over at him. Then he will look at me and then quickly look up and point his nose to the handle of the slider back and forth two or 3 times, to let me kno he has to go out. If I'm not in the same room thought he will come find me get my attention and then once he knows I'm watching him, he will do the same turning his head and pointing to get me to fallow him.

The bells are THE BEST, Kera learned it quickly at 14 weeks when I got her, EVERY time I took her out id ring the bells and say "go potty?" and by the next week every time she wanterd to go out she would either pat them with her paw or grab the rope they are on in her mouth, she taught Nilla, they taught Dora they taught tonka and its peace and harmony untill you hear bells There is actully a company that makes them (for a nice price) I dont know what its called tho, MINE are just 1/2" rope and bells from micheals or walmart in the craft section I dont remeber... I think wal mart has them in their pet section but didnt ring enough for me! MAYBE ILL POST A DIY ON DOOR BELLS

The bell thing is super easy. Zoe had it down in two days.

Everytime you are going to take them out or let them out in the backyard, you say something like "who needs to potty" and right before you open the door you ring the bells. I have mine hanging on the wall next to the back door. So they learn if the bells ring then the door will open..... Sometimes mine ring the bell but don't go potty when they get outside...LOL. It is a wonderful help.
