urine killing my grass! help
I had new grass put in my dog run back in late march early April. The guy who laid the sod told me to keep the dogs off for atleast 3 weeks. I kept them off for a month. Within the last month and a half I've notice yellow patches ( just like the grass you mainly see here in California fields that catch fire every year). No patches in the front yard and I have them on the same water timing. My only thought is the dogs urine because the way the patches are randomly scattered. I want to know if anyone know of a product to put on the grass to help? I'm starting to think its not heavy traffic grass like I requested because I knew the dogs would be on it.

Somebody suggested feeding them cranberries? Not sure how that helps

The dogs have a lot of alkaline in their urine. I place lime in my yard it neutralizes and balances out the ph level. You must be careful when placing the lime on it. You must water it good then let it dry before letting the dogs run on it.

They sell supplements you can give your dog to help reduce burn marks in the grass. I dont know how well they work but if your that concerned about your grass then I guess its worth a shot! They have something called Green ums and NaturVet grass saver tablets.

I am having the same problem with my new grass and it sucks!! I have been using the grass saver from Petsmart but I use the cheaper none name brand. It helps for sure but I am still getting some spots but not as bad. One thing I had started doing is going out with the dogs and a gallon of water and where they peed I put water to dilute it.


A question about the lime, how often do you put it on and do you still get brown marks or does it take care of it? Next weekend we are cutting the brown spots out and putting in new sod, I would love to keep it alive this time! lol

after they pee, take the hose and water it down really good... should keep it from turning yellow

I hear that, lol. I have the one and I tend to slack sometimes.

I try not to let him pee in my yard, if he does its my fault, means I should have walked him before we go back there. I have wayyy to many plants and flowers for him to be killing with his pee.

Diluting the pee does work, but let me know if you try the supplements Bella talked about, curious if they work.

My tip, find one spot to take him too and keep it clean so he wants to keep marking it. That how I go Mel to go where I wanted.

dogs pee where ever they want in the backyard here.. i get no yellowing though

See I have never had this problem but I have never had new sod which I found this out...

Old lawns may be able to handle the nitrogen levels of urine. The site I got this from also put most of the blame on the "bitches" because the squat in 1 spot & males just point & spray where ever.

I put lime out like 3x's during the summer. When I get lazy the spread it with a spreader on a rainy day so I don't have to water. My boys refuse to go out when it's raining. lol

I work at a garden center and this is a common problem for my customers. Lime is the way to go.

I was very skeptical to start Sasha on them but she's been on them about 3 months wit no issues at all, same dog. I give her 4 a day as directed for her weight..

Dang, my post just got eaten...... I'm curious about the lime...will read more.
I don't think there is much you can do about the pee spots. I think the first pee of the day or after a long break is the most concentrated and it prolly wouldn't hurt to try to dilute that with water. I keep a 'dog' side yard fenced off when we are not in there playing. It has a full watering can at all times that I chase Ruby with when she pees. We are relatively successful in maintaining that greenness. I'm skeptical of 'feeding' a supp that will change PH but then I'm still debating about feeding the flea pill that I have now vs topical. We have also switched a different side yard to St. Augustine grass - it's like giant bermuda grass (that you really have to edge!) and is MUCH more rugged. It doesn't prevent all pee spots but is much more tolerant.
