dog park

so since i am going to leave samson home alone tonight i felt guilty and took him to the dog park. this is his second time ever in a park.

he is always looking for someone to taunt/bug/play with ..... some dogs he is too friendly for and snarl at him. he doesnt care he prances around meeting people and dog alike....today there was a female staffy mix ...she was biting his ears ..she was 3 yrs old ..he s 7 months...she was after him....that scared him a lil she was super aggresssive,....

anyways, what is the deal with male dogs humping each other? is it to show dominance ? if so why do they take turns it seems....i dont understand ...and thats the only annoying thing but im not neutering my dog ever.

i broke my camera last week at the park so i got 2 cell pics...fail shots.

There are tons of threads on here about dog parks and before people start to jump onyou for going to one I would suggest typing in dog park in the search bar at the top and doing some reading. Dog parks are not for this breed for MANY reasons. Besides the health issues associate with parks like this.

Dog parks are fun for a moment...until your dog puts a couple holes in another...heck, it could be cuz the other dog was so damn ugly! Even if it were out of self defense...its your fault for having an untamed "pit bull"

Sad but true

I was warned about that originally, and I respect that he can turn on a dog if attacked so I am always near, ..... but I am aware of the dangers. He already got bitten last time by a boston terrier, ....his reaction was ignore the bite, ...i separated them immediately , samson had no reaction ....the lil runt did leave some red spots on my dogs cheek ...... anyways i wanted to see how he would react to aggression and so far he's good but I know in a second it can go sideways possibly, ..... do we have no hope in ever expecting our breed to be out with other dogs within reason? i have only taken him twice to the park ....ive looked up already the parks and these are the highest recommended ones.....ive seen pitbull mixes, staffies and other pitbulls .... i mean i am also told to never have him off leash when i walk him and he obeys all my commands , when i say NO he always stops still , .....ive never hit him ....i yelled at him twice in 7 months and regret it, ..... i free feed him because he eats only when hungry and he is in phenomenal shape for a 7 month old......i was told to not do alot of things but i want to give my dog a chance to prove he can evolve ......i mean at some point from generation to generation the "fight" in the dog will stop being its dominant trait or one of the main ones no? idk ..... i want to do everything possible for this breed, and i take the time to go to people and educate them , ....my dog goes up to anyone and greets him like he greets me when i get home from work ..... idk....i know i am ignorant on the subject and the 7 months that i have been educating myself daily by reading anything APBT related doesnt make me an expert, ....but i would like to think positively and think one day our dogs breed will be a common household name because a lot of the myths and fears will dissipate .

maybe im nuts...could be

Interaction with other dogs is fine within reason, but is better left for planned "play dates" with people and dogs that you know and trust. People who understand what your dog could potentially be capable of. Dogs parks are too volatile since the people and the dogs are always changing. It's best not to set your boy up for failure. The chance that a pit bull type dog will get into it with another dog, regardless of who starts it is high so why risk it?

Your boy hasn't fully matured yet at 7 months either, and since you're opting to keep him intact that is even more reason to stay away from dog parks. You never know, some moron could always show up with a bitch in heat and all hell would break loose.

It might not be your dog who starts the fight, but even at 7 months its is far too young to know how he will be with other dogs. He is learning and since he was already pinned down and lead by an aggressive older dog, your dog is learning how to pin a dog down and how to be aggressive towards other dogs. You can not be a short leash away when trouble starts at a dog park. It does not matter how close you are watching it will happen in a second, far quicker than you are able to get there. Why take the risk? Proper socialization has nothing to do with plating with other dogs off leash. Quit while you are ahead and find other places to bring your dog to exercise.

Think of it like this...every dog fight that happens with a "pit bull" at a park full of strangers is a step closer to BSL being passed

Unfortunatly this is a knee jerk society...and many that are ignorant want to feel like they "know"

I love play dates and watching my dog have fun running around with another dog. I just keep it away from doing that with people I do not personally know and keep very close watch...to the point where my dog might be playing, but he is thinking of ME while doing it

i dont mean to sound like an ass, ....but not one person here has successfully taken their APBT to a dog park throughout its lifetime and had no issues? no one even bothers? i mean how is that re integrating APBT to the main stream if we dont put them out there.

i dont mean to sound disrespectful ....but i have taken all the advice to heart...all of it even months before i took possession of samson....i read books, read internet history and forums and statements and theories and everything there is....including conformation etc etc.... i took all of it seriously and on top of that a friend that has had this breed since she was young gave me all the tips, ...including never go to a dog park etc etc.... and i have followed all the advice and info i have read over the past 8 months..... but....

i free feed him and was told specifically to not do this because they would overeat.....and my dog eats only when he is hungry , he is in beautiful shape...he isnt overweight like the majority of non trained pitbulls I see ....(he walks 2 miles with me twice a week , then maybe park then backyard then goofing off in the house..thats it...i bought a dog to have as a family member ...so how god made him is how he will stay and i will try my best to not interfere with that in any way.

i was told to crate him ..... i leave him in a room for 5 hours when i go to work ....he never pees or poops in the room ,... does have a lil anxiety because we are always together but i take him to work twice a day ....and office....regular office with a lobby etc...pitbull running around lol everyone loves him ....he loves everyone.

he was potty trained when i picked him up, at 10 weeks ..... when we do a new route for our 2 mile walk he recalls it instantly the next week , i let him pull me (another thing i was told to not let him do because he would think he was the alpha)....but this dog obeys all my commands , i dont need a leash ....i only use one when i walk him for 2 miles.....when i walk him to pee he is fine without one but to abide i take him out with one always.

he got bitten by a boston terrier and he didnt snap...i separated them, ..... i know what everyone says, .....but at what point will we be able to treat a pitbull for all its positives and not its negatives....at some point in generation after generation of NOT fighting the dogs personality will change ..... is that not expected??? and when will it be docile enough to re integrate the breed back into general population if you will......

trust me its easy for me to NOT take him to the park....i drive 40 minutes to a top park on purpose to give him the best.....it would be easier not taking him...i do this for him not for me. idk...... this one i have to think about...... i have to be respectful of the breed but i also have to be conscious that every dog is different and i know my dog, ....i am with him daily..... when he looks at me i know what he thinks half the time, ..... idk..... i just think that every person out there that i open their eyes as to what an APBT really is , worth the risks ....man these dogs are smart..so smart , idk ...... something to really think about now..... im kinda bummed, ....he gets so excited.....

I hear ya man. And it all sounds beautiful in a perfect world. But what I meant by a knee jerk society means that you and your well behaved dog will not change the fact that some other pit bull at a park did not behave as well as yours, and the moment a dog like ours is involved in a fight the people will forget how well behaved yours was. People gravitate towards negativity and drama and quik to cast judgement.

We still try educate the people...we just remove as much of the obsticles as possible.

I totally respect your opinion and have been down that road...my dog was never DA as a pup but it wasn't until 4 years old that she put a couple holes in another "pit bull" face at a park that a realized how quik it can change and how much more worst the perception is IF/WHEN it happens.

It is a gamble that I no longer am willing to make because it doesn't look bad on me...its on the breed

I hear you, I really do. I can understand your frustration and thinking your dog might be different. I will not pretend to understand that it will eventually be bred out of them, I don't know how that works. Do you know the lineage of your hound? Do you KNOW he does not come from a line of game bred dogs? If you do, then someone else will have to explain the why. All I know and what I need you to do is understand that everyone is saying this because they have had experiences that you are saying you have not gone through (yet). A lot of people have had to learn the hard way, by separating 2 dogs because they didn't listen. I am not telling you that your dog will 100% have DA in his life. What I want to know is it that important to find out? My dog listens to me 100% of the time, unless another dog is around. I still NEVER EVER let him off leash in public. Even on my own street. The chance that something could happen if far greater than relying on my dog to not let his natural instincts in. But let me ask this, have you ever seen a Boarder Collie? I bet that dog has not been bred for herding longer than the pit bull has not been bred for fighting. I have yet to meet a boarder Collie who hasn't tried to herd a bunch of kids by nipping their heals? Or with a ball putting all his toys in one place. Have you ever meta beagle that didn't sniff or a lab that didn't like to fetch? Its in their blood, herding, sniffing, retrieving, why should we expect a bulldog to be any different? Why would THEY be the only breed that's purpose just disappears over time? It does not make sense to me. But like I said, I am no expert.

I hear your frustration. Can you make friends with any of the others at the park and arrange supervised play dates in an enclosed setting where you have way more control over your dog. Not sure if you read this, but please do it may make another side seem clearer and really makes the point that it probably will NOT be your dogs fault.

https://www.gopitbull.com/general-dis...rk-lovers.html

Is this your first bulldog? I respect your love of your boy, but if its is your first and he is still a baby then please respect what people are trying to help you see. I stayed clear of dog parks, but still let my boy play with other dogs supervised. One day a random dog broke in my neighbors fenced in back yard because he heard my boy and his dog "friend" playing in it, to me it looked like the pup wanted to join in, but my dog went at that pup and thankfully my boy listened. He was 9 months old and I had never seen my boy display anything prior to that day. Now, my eyes are NEVER still when my dog is outside, on a leash, the entire time. Walking on a trail that specifically states no off leash dogs allowed, he was attacked by a off leash pit bull type dog who was "friendly" my boy pinned him and if I didn't have a break stick I would have been paying lots of vets bills. And even though my dog was leashed, it just doesn't matter in some places. The only reason the cop didn't do anything but ticket the other owner for not leashing their dog was because they were both pit bull type dogs. If any other breed had done it, and that owner called the cops, I am not sure it would have ended the same.

Maybe one day, in another hundred years or so their make up could change, but we need to be responsible NOW in order for the breed to survive that long.

im listening, trust me im not blowing anyone off here. ive only seen my dog show aggression in 2 different scenarios.

a) there was another pitbull 2 yrs old at work...i took him with a leash to meet him (cautiously) .....soon as my pup saw the other pitbull looking at him but minding his own business.....samson started to growl ..... so they did not meet....my dog initiated the aggression ...other time at petco this huge dog was looking at samson and same thing...he only does it with larger dogs.

b) when he hears someone come in the house without us opening the door...he jumps out of bed and goes to the front door woooo woooo wooooo woooo type bark. he soon realizes its my son walking in lol .....duh! lol

thanks for the help , ....

hopefully that's all you will ever see.

My boy would do the same thing at the door and I never discouraged it. I have a mud room at my entrance, so basically surrounded by walls on all sides except the doorway. One day, when he was about a year, a neighbor walked inside while I was in the shower. Gargamel lunged at him. I was really nervous he would attack people and I might lose my boy or have to put him down. I had his temperament tested, he passed with flying colors. The problem was he was cornered in my entrance way and probably got scared and when dogs get scared they can lunge or bite. It might not be aggression in your second instance. I would make sure to not let him approach doors by himself. As soon as I hear someone coming or is I am expecting anyone, I put him in a sit/stay on his bed, let the people enter my house (even if he knows them) until they are fully in the house I then tell Mel its OK to go say hi.

teaching him to go to his bed (or a designated spot away from the doorways) was a life saver for me. I have not had another issue with people arriving since. and I now lock my door when I am in the shower, lol.
