is walking enough?

i want to get samson to get in serious shape , i doubt he could lose more than 50lbs because he is already pretty slim ..... so i started walking him 2.5 miles a day 7 days a week.

is that enough??? he runs around and chases flies also in the back yard but no serious action with flirt poles or spring pole.

here is a picture when we started last week .

Depends on him. Its a good amount, but if he still seems like he needs more bump that walk up to a jog or make 2 trips. Since I have several I make 2 2mile trips and switch out dogs. Hes look good, and remember not all dog need to be buff and heavily conditioned. Faith, Mae, Bailey and Justice don't get worked like the others. They are not competing so they don't need to be "conditioned" They just get the normal amount of exercise they need and we leave it at that.

Also if you want muscle tone, add food and work it off. Cutting back food can get them to a weight you want, but doesn't produce the look of a well worked dog.

I look at it like this.....Your dogs are going to be as active as you are especially for us city folk whose dogs don't have much land or big yards to run I've always owned herding breeds such as GSD's and an ACD so I could have a walking/jogging partner to keep up with me and my workouts. I like the active breeds and enjoy keeping my dogs fit and in shape. However, Bella is a freak of nature compared to her out of shape parents LOL! I guess the raw diet and daily workout routines have payed off for her shapely well muscled figure I think Samson looks good and if I remember correctly he is only a little over a year old right? I wouldn't be pushing him to hard just yet anyways but I do think if he likes chasing flies then he would love a flirt pole

He looks fine.. But it all depends on the dog for the most part. How old is he? Some dogs no matter how much you work them they will never be buff as some would call it.. But just to let you know it is kinda like this.. Walking alone will only build muscle tone an endurance not bulk.

If your trying to add muscle and tone him up, take a step back and evaluate his diet.
from my experience 75% of the way a dog looks is his diet and the amount you feed him.
think of it like this , if you where in the gym every day and where on a proper schedule and you ate pizza every day you would have minuscule results compared to if you where on a proper schedule eating adequate protein fats and carbs.

His head is really starting to fill out! Is that a spring pole hanging from the tree in that pic? Does he just not care for it? Loki loves his spring pole and plays on it daily in addition to fetching constantly (if you can call me tossing his kong and him flipping and catching it mid air ” fetching”) and he is starting to get some serious definition. We actually just upped his food intake by about a cup a day from two to now three cups of TOTW split into two meals and that was when his muscle tone really started to pop. I had always been concerned with overfeeding but this time of year he needs the extra calories due to the added activity.

Speaking of that.. Shit my 24 week old pup is eating 2 cups of TOW kibble a day.. 1 raw egg, and 1/2lbs raw beef or 2 boiled split breast with skins an a 1/4 cup of "fresh" pineapple. DAILY!

Edit -- An would eat even more if I let him.

a 50 to 55 lb dog with regular not heavy exercise for that particular dog only needs about 2 to 2 1/2 cups of food thats on a high quality feed. My girl akiliya is 52 lbs right now and eats 2 cups a day. Mine are one TOTW Wetlands for the most part which is 32/18

Adult Dog Dry Food Wetlands Canine Formula - Taste of the Wild Pet Food

All dogs are different going by the bag is not always the best thing. My girl Akiliya gets fat if I was to feed her anymore then I do.

That is correct. If you want your dog in the best shape, you are looking to find his "true weight."
Beef and bulky will add more stress to a dogs heart, making less winded.
But walking has to be one of the most natural ways to exercise a dog.

Free feeding is best...dogs actually eat up to 25% less than a schedule diet (unless you are under feeding.)
No need to change his diet if he is just walking.
And be careful with too much protein. Too much is hard on the kidneys.
If his urine has a strong ammonia smell, protein is too high.

And if he is just over a year, remember he is not totally mature in the body.
A dog isn't physically mature until around two years.
But long walks are not an issue here.

i normally feed him blue buffalo wilderness or natural balance synergy .

for example i just put a cup in his bowl ....he looked at it and walked away. samson has very goo eating habits, he doesnt even hurry and scarf anything down.

anyways here is couple of pics after 1.5 weeks of walking , on a free stack about to yawn lol (thats why his mouth is open

Looks great for the most part.. Hind legs look a little small, but not by much. I am assuming he is no longer intact? But at 1.5 years of age he is just really starting to fill out as his growth stage has just ended.

he will never be neutered, thats just a ridiculous thing to do to a dog. I am pretty sure I can monitor him for the rest of his life without him humping a neigborhood dog lol

he is 13.5 months
