New England Pitbulls

Hi everyone, I have a dumb question

I've always owned double coated fur dogs, made for cold weather.. We'll I rescued a Pit back in May, and now as it gets colder up here in New England, I'm noticing that he loves to be in his warm bed with his blankey over him..

His underneath still has no hair, what precations if any do I need to make it the cold winter months???

He sleeps in the house, and is only outside when with someone from the family, I'd prefer not to get one of those doggie sweaters as I have made fun of those people my entire life, but several people suggested it was a good idea...Tell me it ain't TRUE

Ecko has a hoodie, and a regular velcro jacket. He's FL dog through and through, so in the colder months he NEEDS a jacket.
I recomend a jacket of some sort. There are more masculine ones out there. No need for ruffles, or pink bows.

Yeah Mel will be OK in the winter, but at night he shivers and I feel bad. My mom knitted him a nice sweater, Mel LOVES pillows and blankets as well and when I cant find him during the day I just look for where the sun is coming in a window and there he is. Fe follows the sun through the house all day, lol. I worry more about deicer and my boys paws than him being cold outside. I make sure we walk fast so he warms up, we were spoiled last year Didn't need the sweater once, but shoot where in NE are ya? There is a fun show in Massachusetts in October you should come check it out!!!

We're in NE also and my dog hates the cold.

Sorry to say that once it gets cold she starts with sweaters in late fall and graduates to full winter wear of coat and boots (for snow/ice).

I'm pretty certain she doesn't give a damn how she looks at that point.

< in the avatar she's wearing one of her mid-winter fleeces for cold, dry weather

I live in Northern CA kinda towards the bottom of the mountains. We're actually in the middle of two big mountains lol. It's HOT summers and Cold cold winters here. If we are out furring the day he does have a hoodie that he'll wear. Since they do have very sleek short coats they do tend to get cold fast.

If you have an old sweatshirt that is tattered or torn that you've got in the back of your closet or dresser drawer that you don't plan on wearing anymore and haven't thrown away, that will suffice. I have an average size (most people think she's small b/c they're used to bigger dogs) APBT that as my daughter outgrows her sweatshirts/jackets, I recycle them for her. My boy has an undercoat and a top coat since he's a mixed breed (most likely GSD mix), so he doesn't get cold as easy. Your dog will need something since they've got a single layer coat, unlike breeds with longer, fuller coats, especially considering where you're located.

It's a fun show! The New England APBT is new ad trying to establish itself since there is not a huge NE presence. Trying to get more people involved to have more local events. I know a bunch of people going and would love if you checked it out. You can bring any breed of dog, registered it not, APBT or mutt. It's just a fun show! Here is some more information. It's by a member on here, she just isn't all that active. Here is the flyer! Let me know if you have questions. I'm in Quincy. Nice to see another masshole on here . It's about an hour from you maybe?

I put bag balm on my boys paws in the winter and I worry about baths for dry skin. I know mine is bad. I give my boy some fish oil in his kibbles and don't notice a problem. Some dogs are bothered by the cold though.

@Ames-- Gargamel the Pillow Hoarder LMAO.

But yes-- jackets and/or sweaters They make some very nice looking masculine ones for male dogs now. All of my dogs have jackets for winter weather (I live in north Georgia up in the mountains, it gets pretty darned cold!)... obviously my females get the pretty stuff... but this year I have to buy for my male Mini Poodle. My husband makes fun of the girls with their bright colors and adorable girly stuff lol... but he won't tolerate the same on his BOY dog. Bruce has navy blue, black and dark green stuff from last year that he no longer fits (he was a pup) so I figure it would be more of the same this year lol.

I never was a fru fru type of person until I got Beastley. He simply shivers in Ohio winters. I purchased him a dark blue hoodie for late fall and in the winter I found him a dark blue and grey winter coat, very masculine (but his collar and leash had to match his coat . Bag balm for paws to protect from snow/salt and I wash off once I enter the house. Fish oil in his food to keep skin from being dry.
