Eating poop

Hi now I have a problem with jade. The vet told me to feed her what is on the bag which is 1 cup a day. ( Science diet puppy ) . Today I caught her eating her poop. Am I feeding her enough she acts hungry. Why is she eating it. Any suggestions to help break it would help me out and what I should do.

Usually have at least a foster a month, its so rewarding to see a dog that always stayed in the back of the kennel turn in to a playful puppy :)

One cup a day!!!??? WAY TOO LITTLE!!!

Best way to feed a pup is to free feed.
That is the only way for a dog to develop its full potential.
By free feeding the dog you will also take away the "wild dog syndrome" where they get protective of food.
If you do try this you may have to gradually increase the food so pup doesn't over eat at first.
Once it gets normal, the pup will only eat on occasion and never eat whole dish, so you just keep it full.
Also, the dog will eat 20-25% less than a scheduled feeding, so it will save you money.

The only time to stop free feeding is when conditioning for a show.
I would get off the science diet.
A good feed that is affordable is Iams Smart Puppy.

As for poop eating, yes it can be lack of nutrients...Check the teeth. If they are yellow this is a sign as well.
But in adult dogs that do it, eating others, it has been known to be related to dominance, not health problems.

Eating poop

You can put pumpkin purée (no seasonings or anything just plain pumpkin purée) in the food and it will be good going in but once it's digested they won't want to eat poop. (I also learned that on here)

Don't take vets advice on nutrition, science diet isn't any better than grocery store crap, just overpriced bag of grain. Get your pup on a meat based food, they are carnivores. Take her out on a leash and pick up her poop right away so it doesn't become a habit, there are things you can add to their diet to deter them from poop eating as well but it may go away on a better food. Also puppies should be fed 2-3 times a day and you want to go off how she looks, not what's on the bag or what someone else is feeding their puppy, if she's too thin feed more, if she's chunky cut back.

Eating poop

Free feeding can also develop picky eaters so just be aware. They keep honking something else might appear if they wait long enough.

I would get on a better quality kibble and feed more often. My boy is 4 and gets fed twice a day. He gets a sour belly if he goes too long without food. My dog growing up was fed only once a day but puppies until 6 months or so should be 3 times a day.

Also give your dog some pineapple and it makes them not want To eat their poops. It makes it taste gross (not sure how it already doesn't taste gross lol)

iv'e never heard of pumpkin keeping them from eating poop. Pineapple works for that though. I also agree 1 cup a day is too little, should maybe be 1 cup a feeding and maybe 2x a day.
I would also look at a better foor science diet is not all that great , vets push it cause of kick backs they get from the company. I think it was once better quality but things have changed with them and they are below sub par now. For the same money you can do alot better. Some say when they eat poop it is because they lack something in their diet. Id change food and if that does't help I would add a spoon of pineapple to her kibbles.

Pumpkin helps keeps pups regular not too hard or too soft. Never heard dogs not wanting to eat it or wanting to eat it.

If the pup is going in the house and eating it, it could be that she understands that you don't like her going in the house, but isn't getting taken out, and is wanting to hide it.

Or so i have been told....

Please stop feeding Science Diet! It's corn with meat flavoring.
Dogs are carnivores and need meat. Look at dogfoodadvisor.com and look at the 4 and 5 star rated foods.
As far as eating poop, try pineapple, as someone else suggested earlier. And google "Copraphagia" (I might have spelled it wrong) >.<
