We used a harness when our puppy was smaller. Now that he is 70 lbs we use a choke chain.

Re: What kind of leash or vest or collar
I have personally found that if u get a wider collar, I run 1.5 inch, the dog is less likely to make that choking sound. I have never been a big fan of walking harnesses, seem to have better control with a collar.

1.5" or 2". I got mine a really beautiful and sturdy 2" collar for under $20 at an Etsy seller; KollarMutt. It's washable and a martingale. She also makes prong collar covers for about $10.

Harnesses encourage pulling so I would not use one for walking. If she is choking herself you need to back up and start with teaching her to walk on a leash.

Our pup started pulling a lot when we would walk her so at the recommendation of our dog walker/trainer, we got the Sensation Harness. This changed out life! She immediately stopped pulling and we didn't have to do any desensitization work with it. Here is the link: Softouch Concepts, Inc Homepage
One thing to note, we used to leave it on her when she was in her crate, but she ended up getting it loose and chewed it all up. We now take it off if she is in her crate and only put it on as part of her leash when we are taking her out.

i used a regular walking harness with flex when he was a puppy with out standing results. he didnt wear a collar until about 6 months of age and was already leash trained so there was not transition. to train him with the harness on what i did was walk him on my left side with a 4 ft leash. i would hold the loop with my right hand and the midway point of the leash with my left. this gave flex just enough space to walk right next to me. i feel i have better control if a situation arises and my dog is right next to my left leg with two hands on the leash. if he lagged behind i simply would give a small tug and say heel and if he went ahead of me id give a tug backwards and say heel. worked perfect for me.

I used a walking harness with a clip on the front, no idea what its called but the leash clips on in the middle of the dogs chest and if they pull it turns them inwards, towards you which they dont like, the more they pull the more they get turned around and they just stop pulling and walking besides you. After that I transitioned to a regular collar with no problems whatsoever.
