how should i go about getting onyx to swim for the first time?

its getting warmer which means more oportunities to go outside and exersize with onyx!! i plan on taking him hiking im sure he would LOVE it. he loves going anywhere new and loves to smell everything. he is also very athletic and loves to exersize as long as its fun for him as well. the only thing is the place i go hiking gets very despite all the shade from trees. the main trail goes all the way around a huge lake so when its hot we go swimming. problem onyx is not a friend of the water. he's never been swimming but he hates the shower and hose. so how do i make his first swimming expirience fun and not scary??

i never had this problem before cuz my other dogs loved water weather it was from a hose or pool. but bathing onyx is more of a workout!!

You most deffinatly don't want the first time to be scary. Have a favorite toy with you and only go in a little like up to your ankles coax him to come with you. Does he like to play tug you could be in the water and him on dry ground and just play. Splash the water around alittle and see how he re-acts. If he is liking it do it some more. Chalice loves the water the first time I took her she smaw right out into the deep area. I bought her a small kiddies pool to have in the yard you could do the same for Onxy.

swimming

If he has a buddy who swims, go to gether for onyx to see it is fun. that is what worked with my crew. Then a good game of fetch in the water always works too.

all my dogs hate the water no matter what I did they would not get in but last summer I took Havoc to the lake with us and my BF helped me put her on the raft with me and we floated around the lake but she held on to me and the raft for dear life for the first 5 or so min then she was okay but she still doesn't like to go in the water without being on a raft lol it's kinda cute and everyone tells me that my dogs are to spoiled but oh well we had fun!

good idea. his favorite game is tug!! maybe if i throw the rope in at the shallowest point he will go to get it (that rope goes wherever he goes!) just enough to get his feet wet for the first few throws.

i also like the idea of having a buddy around that likes to go swimming. i met this couple at the dog park they own an irish wolf hound (they love to play with each other although their dog makes onyx look like a kitten! maybe i could ask them to take their dog since heis also very active.

I always go swimming with them the first time.
Swim along with him keeping your hand on his chest holding him up until he gets comfortable..

Word of advice, don't expect him to know how to swim. Sadies loves to "wade" in the water, but she can't (or won't swim). She just keeps trying to step, and sinks straight to the bottom. She just doesn't swim. She's a weirdo. I had always been told all dogs can swim, but that's apparently not true.

You are absolutely right, Dogs are not always born knowing how to swim.
Don't let him figure out on his own that he can't either. Do like I said earlier and get your butt in there with him and help him out.

Midwest Bully will become famous soon enough
I know it sounds mean but just throw him in.
Have some one go in to the creek and just put him in there, who ever is in the water can hold on to the leash and swim around with him. Thats what i've always dome it works. They just need to get over the initial fear of not knowing what going to happen once they are in.

that's what we do....we leash walk them around in the water up to where they can barely stay on their feet for a while...until they are comfortable in water.... then we find a creek and on eof us goes in while the other stays at the bank and throws them in!!!! Works like a charm too!!! All of our dogs love the water!

My sister's friend threw me in the middle of the lake when I was about 6 and I about drowned. Then, when she jumped in after me, I about drowned her. I'm not a big fan of that technique.

Some dogs may freak out if they get pushed, or they could get an injury.

For Buster's first time swimming, I had him on a leash and we went for a walk and then just walked straight into the water (at a lake near my brothers house).

I let him take some time to get adjusted to the water, we walked slowly into the river, and when the water got over his head, he just started swimming.
