Scared of people suddenly ??

I've had my pit since she was 5 weeks old. She is now 4 months almost.
Within the last month she has acted terrified of people and it makes no sense. She has never had anything but positive experiences with people and was never mistreated by anyone. She is a spoiled girl and everyone loves her.
Why in the world would she start acting this way all of a sudden. I'm at a loss here...

Puppies go through stages... sounds like she's going through a fear stage right now. I'm not awake enough to realllllly go into it, but here:
puppy development stages | Wonder Puppy

I'm sure one of our wonderful trainers will chime in, but I'm pretty sure this is normal, as every dog I've ever raised has gone through similar phases. It is usually best to continue with the positive experiences, but also make sure you aren't teaching them that it's okay to be afraid- such as treating when they are obviously scared. Ugh. Yep too little coffee to bee coherent. :P

Hello mitty18,

What behavior does your girl exhibit around people that makes you think that it is afraid of people? Also, what has changed in her life in the last month?

Joe

I am not a trainer, but I was thinking a developmental fear stage like MamaTank as well.

I would think all dog's develop at their own pace and some may experience stages a little earlier or a little later than the "norm".

MamaTank gave a great reference on developmental stages; and here is another good one just for more info and comparison:

Developmental Stages

It would probably be good to not make a big deal out of the pups fears, just keep building positive experiences.

When we're walking and we pass people or people are ahead of us on the walk she'll start whimpering and tucks her tail under Herr, bunkers down, and doesn't want to walk near them.

Are you 100% possitive the pup has never been abused at all? Has it always been a more naturally submissive or spooked easily? You could try confidence building exercises with the pup. If its confidence gets boosted the shyness may subside.

I've had her since right before she turned six weeks. She was always shy and timid but not really down right scared like she has started to act now. I know 200000% she has never been abused since I've gas her. I can't say whether she was at the place she was born but this behavior is new so I don't think she was. I will look into that thank you.

First off your girl looks very similar to my 8 month old female

If you say she was skiddish early on, then possibly the trait is merely reappearing now? It's either that or (and I know you've already stated she was never abused) possibly something happened to her that you're not aware of It doesn't have to be human related. It could have been an altercation or shit, something that happened when you weren't (or anyone) was around to see it!!!?? Can you recollect exactly when you first noticed the skiddish behavior? Possibly trace steps back to an incident.

Funny related story, about a month ago I was walking Luna down a sidewalk in Old Town Scottsdale when a few Clydesdales n' buggy strut up. Luna stopped dead in her tracks and sat down shaking uncontrollably. It was the oddest thing, she was "spooked" in every sense of the word. After the Clydesdales left, she was still shaking and not wanting to walk to just plain acting eradic! Thank god she snapped out of it bc I thought for sure she had been forever traumatized lol (probably is)

Keep in mind dogs who are taken from the litter early are 85% more Likely to have problems as adults (incessant barking, fear, aggression issues, trust issue lots of things that staying with the litter until 8 weeks or more helps teach the dog, if the owner is unaware of) . *I just heard that fact today. I'm asking for the documentation behind it I will Post once I get it.* But since she is 4 months Sounds like a fear stage like the others said so read up or get a trainer to help you so life long issues won't be a problem. Good for you for trying to figure it out now.

She is Bach to her usual happy people loving self. Weird but glad it's over. On another note she can now sit on command, leave it 85% of the time, and is learning that she won't get attention and petting unless she sits pretty and waits for it. Oh and she knows come and follows that command 89% of the time.
We've switched her to blue buffalo and she is looking awesome. Her coat is nice and shiny and the thin hair spot she had has cleared up.
