need some advise
Hello,
I am new to this so please bare with me. We are wanting to breed our female pit. We have selected a mate for her to breed with. Does anyone have any advise on breeding and taking care of a bitch while she is pregnant?
Thanks
Hannah

I have never bred a dog before; but I would like to say that it would probably be better for you to get all the information and become as educated as possible on the subject BEFORE you breed your female. The costs during pregnancy/taking care of pups are quite high; and it can be dangerous to your female if the breeding is not done correctly. Have you had health testing done on her, as well as the male? That is important on having healthy pups. Are both dogs purebred? It makes no sense to breed mutts, seeing as how the shelters/rescues are full of those already. It's a big decision to breed your dog, and the last thing the world needs is another BYB. Do your research, make informed decisions. Its in the dog's best interest as well as your own.
and welcome to the group.

Why would you want to breed?
I believe that should be left to the pros...JMO
So many things can go wrong. Also the internet is over run by "pitbull puppies" for sale..

Okay first off. Is she papered? If not what would be the purpose for the breeding OTHER than money or because she's such a great pet? Has she been OFA or Penn-Hip tested and health checked, and given the okay to be healthy enough to breed? Are you ready for the vet cost DURING the pregnancy and in the event of a rough delivery? Has the male been OFA and Penn-hip and Health checked also? Is he papered? Are there champion lines behind these dogs? Do you have homes lined up for these puppies already?
Many people will breed their dogs because they hope to make money when in reality you rarely make any money off of a pregnancy the cost of vet care and keeping the female healthy often cost more than the benefits of selling the puppies. Also while papers don't make the dog by any means, if your dog is just a pet by breeding all that happens is more pups get put into circulation that have no history behind them and more often than not they end up in shelters or abandonded or overbred themselves and the cycle just starts all over again.
Reputable breeders will have a plan for their breedings what they hope to accomplish with their litters (ie better conformation or a stronger weight puller) and they will have home for most if not all of the puppies lined up before the breeding takes.
Just some food for thought. If you've already done all this then good on ya!

i know everyone has to start somewhere, but PLEASE do your homework, make sure it's really what you want to do, and make sure you know all the time, money and headache it's gonna take to breed.
just one question tho, why do you want to breed?

By homework they mean go and get the cold hard facts. You can take advice from a bunch of people you don't know or you can read publications. I would like to state that MANY things can go wrong, and c-sections aren't cheap.

alright,I was looking to see if anyone had and tips or info that they would like to share...from their own experiences, but it seems that people think that i don't understand things and that I haven't done my research, but I have so please don't tell me in so many words that i haven't. I do have people that would want the puppies plus I would be keeping some of the puppies, its not for the money.....
If anyone has any tips that would be greatly appreciated...
Thank you

Why did you skip over the questions asked?
Are they purebred and papered? Have both sire and dam been health tested? Do you have a real reason for breeding?
We are only trying to help prevent irresponsible/uneducated mistakes.
