Question Kenya hates going on walks.....

so it has been pretty difficult walking the girls. Chyna LOOOVVVEEESSS going on walks and has been excited since day one. she has toned down alot and its starting to behave very well before and on her walk. Kenya on the other hand is gettin worse. I usually walk Chyna and my Bf walks Kenya and we walk for a little over a mile every night. but it seems like kenya gets through 1/2 the mile and then starts to lay on the grass sit down, or just stop or lag. tonight she laid down, and we were litterally draggin her on her back. i dont get it.

i figured maybe she was bored or not enjoying it so i brought treats wit me this time, but it really didnt seem to work. when we go hiking and she is off leash she does phenomenal! but when we walk around our nieghborhood she sucks lol.

any tips to help her enjoy it more, or maybe why she is even doing this????

How old is she now? I remember when I took Smokey out once when he was about 3 months or so, he did the same thing. I just didn't try it again until he was 5 months old, and he did fine. I would just keep walking, and keep her away from grass. Walk her on the street if you have to, and be as stubborn as her

My shih tzu does that. Sometimes it's so bad you have to pick him up and carry him home. Something that my hubby suggested was that we change the time of the walk. We went everynight at 7 and a few smaller walks through out the day. I changed the long walk to 3 and changed the route I walked it did seem to work. I have no idea why. He still does it but not nearly as much as he use to.

she is 5 and 1/2 months now, yeah yesterday i my hub picked her up and carried her for a little while, and then she started to walk and did pretty good. i think she hates being on the leash. cuz she has no problem follwoing when she is off leash when we hike. but i dont wanna have her off leash when we go on our walk becuase we are in the neighborhood and any dog can come up to her or she could run into the street and get hit.

i think u may be right roxy. i am gonna try a different route and see how she does, i think sh eis just bored, so eh.... well see.

she likes to run too, so maybe i could jog with her but if i do tht i would have to walk to girls separetely. cuz chyna runs HELLLLAA fast lol

You could also try one of those retractable (sp?) leashes....We use one with Zoe sometimes...She loves it. They have some really strong ones at Petco.

Post A few things to try

I would recomend you trying a different route with some new smells along the way. Also, maybe try to walk her in the morning if you can, see if that makes a difference. And maybe a choke chain might keep her in more control for you.

Grizz gets "bored" on his walks and wants to do his own thing that why i break it up into cycles i walk then we rest and he gets "sniff time" where he gets to do doggie things like sniffing, laying down, rolling in grass, or just being his weird self. After that we jog a little bit to get his heart rate going and back into " migration mode". once he has his jogging pace we motor back down to "the walk". Mastering the walk is not easy it is a bond between you and your dog. A very special time where the pack moves together it is a good way to establish dominance and trust with your pup. Some people treat the walk as a time to take there dogs to a place where they dont have to pick up what they leave behind lol. it should be used as an excercise in commands, dominance, and trust. So just try breaking it up into cycles that suits her little internal schedule hopefully soon she will get the rythm of things. A half mile is not very far to take a break so maybe lengthen it over a period of time into a break at about 20 or 30 minutes taking a 5 or 10 minute break then a 5 to 10 minute jog and another 20 or 30 minute walk. When me and grizz are in migration mode he heels and is kept on short leash when it is time to "sniff" he is told and he goes freely offleash if it is acceptable and if not i just follow his every whim while he is leashed so he ffels free lol. When his time is up he sits i explain to him we are walking and we restart our walk together and work into a slow jog to get him excited about the rest of his walk. when he starts panting a small water break is in order after his thirst is quenched we walk. He looks forward to everywalk now but there was a time (especially when training with his gentle leader) when he would stop in the middle of the road and no one could move him with out picking him up or dragging him lol. Good luck with kenya and "the walk".

p.s. grizz heels like a fiend when im shaking treats in my hand like dice. put some freeze dried liver in your palm and shake those dice letting them sniff once in a while to let htme know whats up lol. Now thats an attention grabber, dog will never heel better.

I snap the leash off to the side to get them motivated. Think it's a bit early for a pinch collar. Maybe try a harness, I've had alot of success with em.

I hope to have grizz doing weight pulling so he knows when the harness is on it is a ok to pull me around. I use a basic choke chain when I want him to heel and he knows it's not time to pull maybe switch it up.

We have always used a harness on Zoe. It was great in the beginning when she didn't really want to walk...LOL
