Mixing kibble. Same brand, different protein source. Is it ok?

Hey everyone.

I usually alternate bags of Luna's kibble back n forth between Orijen Regional Red and Orijen Six Fish. If she finishes a 15lb bag of Regional Red then I buy a 15lb bag of Six Fish. And vice versa.

Well today I went to buy her a new bag and I guess it was my 12th bag so I got my 13th free! So now I have 2 bags. 1 of the Red and 1 of the Fish.

Here is my question. Should I just stick with feeding her one at a time like I have been doing or is it ok to mix the entire two bags together and have her kibble made-up of both?

Both feeds have nearly identical ingredients as it pertains to the carb source (peas/lentils) as well as fruits! The only difference is the protein source (bison/boar/beef/Lamb etc versus Herring/Walleye/Pike etc)

I figured that since I have both 15lb bags here that possibly a little variety would be beneficial? Or does it really not matter and is a waste of time?

Luna says Thank you!

Most people probably wouldn't because the dog might get an upset tummy...but I do this ALL the time I buy Acana and then when that bag is almost out I get Instinct...and mix those two until Acana is out....and the when Instinct is almost out I get Orijen and mix those lol!

I have never ever had a problem. Dogs in the wild eat all kinds of random stuff and its not the same thing over and over...oh and I even switch flavors each month. I go through all the different Orijen and Acana flavors and the Instinct grain free varieties..so my dogs get all kinds of proteins...lol

Haha thanks Coach! Jeeze you're all over the place with that kibble lol. I'm sure Luna's tummy would be ok with the mix seeing as the Six Fish and Regional Red are VERY similar in content.

I was just wondering if there would be any "benefit" to doing it....... For example, the Six Fish has Omega's and stuff that the Regional Red does not.

Also, have you noticed a difference in stool, amount fed and overall health/condition between the Acana and Orijen? I know they are the same company but I sometimes wonder if Luna is pissing and chitting away my hard earned money

I don't plan to switch her from Orijen, EVER (unless I decide to go 100% RAW) but was just curious as to the difference in nutritional content from Acana to Orijen.

I don't think it would really matter if you mixed them or not for any sort of extra benefit...as each is complete alone...but I am no expert on the matter, someone else may have a different opinion

I don't notice a difference at all in coat/performance with Acana and Orijen. I seriously don't. My dogs favorite flavors of all the ones I feed are the Instinct Limited ingredient Duck and the Acana Ranchlands...and for Orijen they like the Fish one

Nope not the rest of this week, have too much else to do this week..

You can mix, however you can do what I do when I feed kibble and go one or two bags of one protein formula then go to the other for a bag or two, repeat.

It won't hurt anything by mixing however there isn't really a benefit either as long as you aren't feeding the same thing every single month

Thanks Km

Last question......with feeding such a nutritionally high kibble, do you think a pup could benefit from supplemental salmon oil and/or coconut oil? Or would I just be throwing money out the window?

If you recommend salmon or coconut oil, how often and how much would you put in each meal?
