Vet scolded me for feeding Soilid Gold Puppy?

Hey all,

Lilly just had her first vet visit yesterday (wormer, vaccines microchip exet.) The vet came highly recomended from friends who are pretty serious when it comes to their animals and his rates were reasonable.

When I told him I was in the process of switching her from Purina puppy to Solid Gold he told me that SG puppy was an inferior food due to it being "difficult to digest" and recommended Science Diet.

All SG products score well on the dog food comparison charts and seem to get above average reviews. Havn't looked into Science Diet much, but just thought this was odd...

Any input?

Okay I agree that switching AWAY from purina is a good move, its not a very good food. Scient Diet is just...not my favorite and my dogs would rather starve than eat it.

I am looking at Solid Gold and it has a lot of berries and carrots and broccoli and grains and oils and it does look like it would be hard to digest. Dogs don't need fruits and berries they are MEAT eaters lol.

If you are worried about cost, Blue Buffalo is one that most people go with, its a good food. Personally I feed Taste of the Wild, completely grain free kibble and it runs me about $45 a bag for a 30lb bag.

Here is a good site to look at different foods. You want something that is mostly meat products, with no wheat, corn, barley.

My thoughts are that he suggested Science Diet because he is proabably on their payroll. Go to the aforementioned website, and take a look at the foods that are no less than 4 star foods. If you don't mind spending a lot on your dog's food, then look in the 5 and 6 star sections. I feed Innova, and highly recommend it.

yes, the vets are just suggestion science diet becuase they are gettin paid to sell it.... science diet is crap... steer away from that plz. but yea, check out blue buff. i had kenya on that when she first came home. the only thing is she was REALLY hyper after eating it hahaa. it was fun to watch tho. and its decently priced...

Solid Gold is good yet very expensive. Its mostly for dogs that have food allergies. Vets recommend Science Diet because they get a kickback from what they sell. If your dog doesn't have problems eatting foods with high protein, then Precise is an excellent choice or Wellness. Either brand is great for dogs

such a likely response from a vet. they get their nutrition information 2 hour course provided by non other then science diet.

OOOOOhhh so true...I had a vet tell me the same thing once, guess what, he isn't my vet anymore. When a vet recommends garbage to me over my pets well being just because a bonus for him has been added into the equation, then I know my dogs health has been compromised and the vet will be treating my dog and my wallet with a clouded vision.

Doesn't that make you guys wonder if your own doctor's advice is biased in some way? Scary thought huh?

I am sure it is...but at least you know when something is working for you or not, sometimes dogs can be harder to read and understand. Especially since pit bulls are soo good with pain tolerance

Bedlam would you suggest taste of the wild for a puppy? I found an "all stages" food but no puppy food. I'm currently feeding Nutro Natures Choice for large breed puppy.

As far as the Science Diet discussion, that is all my wife feeds her two ankle biters. I've tried countless times to get her to switch to a better food, but she swears by it. Today we were at TSC buying some kibble when I saw "Science Diet Nature's Best". So I was able to at least talk her into buying a natural food. Anyone have any opinions on the science diet natural foods?
