Went to the vet for booster vaccinations...

3 shots and checked for heartworms= $200! I am seriously considering doing my own shots from here on out (not sure if I can do the rabies with our county requiring documentation from the vet). Can anyone school me on this? What vaccinations to give, and how to administer etc? If the annual vaccinations are just under the skin I don't think I would have any problem with them, but I am a little overwhelmed with all the different ones out there. Also, what are your opinions on the bordatello vaccine? We got this done by the vet for $40 last year and Trippy ended up with kennel cough anyway.

I always give my dogs Canine Distemper-Adenovirus Type 2-Hepatits-Parinfluenza-Parvovirus-Lepto Vaccine when they are pupies I have the vet also give them the Corona vaccination too. My vet only charges me 8.00 for the main shots and 4.00 each for the corona vacc and kennel cough vacc. They aslo recommend the shots every three yrs but I give them yearly. My dogs around alot of other dogs. SOme time on a given class night there can be 75 dogs runnign around. I don't take chance with my pups.

I would call around for quotes that seems really high priced.

I just got back from the vet today, and Kallie got her yearly rabies vac at $12and I have got prescriptions for Indi at about $6-8 and the last time Indi recieved her parvo and distemper I dont think it went over $26..200 seems really high for 3 shots. Hmm. Before this last few vet visits I got a discount since my mom worked at a vet, so im not sure of the exact cost of things elsewhere.

also, Indi is getting her heartworm check today and it was 26, only 21, since she is being spayed they gave me a little discount. Hope this helps you decide about what you wanna do! I would say call some other vets for pricing.

WOW that is definately a ripoff! Do you have any vaccine clinics around? I know the vet I go to on weekends offers vaccine clinics where the shots are all like half cost.

also have you thought of getting pet insurance?

I have VPI for Peanut and they give you a choice of vaccines or titer and its $30 for all for the year..

Find a local feed store, and they will most likely have the 6-in-1 shots available. I pay $10 (syringe included) and yeah, right under the skin. As far as the rabies, you won't be able to do it yourself. I went to a pet clinic and they charged me $22 ($14 for the shot + $8 office visit) As far as the boosters, I only gave my boy his 1 year booster, and I'm not going to give him any more vaccines. Only the rabies, because it's required by law.

Vaccinations to me, are simply money makers for the vets. Before vaccinations existed, I'm pretty sure dogs lived longer lives.

I definitely agree. Vets make like 90% of their yearly commission on shots alone. Your dog builds an immunity to it after their 1 year booster. Rabies is the only one to be continued after that because it's the one that can break down in the dogs system.

Dang I have to find a new vet. My vet charges $73/office visit PER animal!!

The only problem with thinking that casue years ago dogs did fine with out vaccinations that they will be fine these days is you have to factor in all the travel people do these days. It is not uncomman for people to take trips all over the country often times taking their dogs with them. This speads illness.

I usually give my dogs yearly shots for the first 5yrs then I tapper back on the vaccinations. Unless I take my dogs all over the place. or if it is a year with tons of strays showing up I make sure all the dogs get vaccinated. Last year was good only two dogs here, this year I bet it will be bad with the ecomony as it is.

I was just talking about this the yesterday. We went to the Tractor Supply store (to look for dog food...they had TOTW!) and I noticed that they had this fridge and it was filled with shots! They were CHEAP..like $6 and $8. I would def check out a feed store or farm store...tractor supply, something like that, if you feel confident enough to give them yourself!

if you get your own vax make sure you keep them refigerated even on the way home keep em on ice..if you dont you can risk compermising the effectiveness of the vaccine

Well, thanks for the info guys! I knew I was getting overcharged but i was off by how much. I suppose I could hit up a feed store and just get a 6 in 1 vaccination then and give him the shot when it is time. Any recommendations on brand or does it make a real difference? Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a vet near us except for this one. I suppose he has the market on lockdown and that is why he gets away with charging so much. How about the bordatello though, does anyone do this if they have to board their dog(s)?

If your dogs are going to be around other dogs often, I would recommend the bordatella vaccine, even if the other dogs are vaccinated. My dogs all have the bordatella because they often times come with me to work, but I would also get it just because it's safer and my puppy got kennel cough when she was young and it scared the crap out of me! Sounds like your dog is going to hack up its lungs! At the vet they can either give you a shot or shoot the stuff up it's nose! I don't think I'd have the guts to give my dogs their own shots, but I think I'm definitely overcharged when it comes to $40 an office visit!! I love my vet, though :/ he's a good guy, he always educates me and tells me my options and tells me if it's necessary for me to get the shot or optional and blah blah blah, and with my puppies when i come back for the other sets of puppy shots he doesn't charge me on the visit. I think it cost me like $12 for the bordatella vaccination and like $18 for rabies...
