Thoughts on Orijen dog food?

Hey Folks,

I currently feed my dogs Taste of the wild. I have tried to switch them up to wilderness in the past with no luck. I have had no negative experiences with taste of the wild but its not a "must have" for me.

The reason I am looking to switch is...

We're looking to switch my female off of puppy food. We have tried multiple different kinds including the same flavor in the adult brand. She has been licking and scooting for anal relief (her glands have been cleaned) and she is licking her paws to the point she limps.

My old male has been blowing the house up for the last two cycles of different flavors of food. He could clear out Walmart on Black Friday.

A friend of mine told me about Orijen and she raves on it. Everything I read is great about it and for me, its worth a try to help my pup feel better and to give peace to my house at night for what my male is currently doing in here.

I've switched her over to a bland diet in the mean time (we've had to do this in the past) to help clear her up and will wien her back on to kibble.
  • Yes, We have tried to target what is causing the issue eliminating common ingredients for both dogs in the foods. I'm just looking at changing the food up to something they both can eat and enjoy while providing a healthier diet.

Me personally I love Orijen food. I have not tried a lot of foods but I like what it has done for my dog. Of course my dog loves it and I rest easy knowing she is eating a quality kibble. If I didn't feed Orijen I would feed acana but it's made by the same company. Her coat has a nice shine to it and being that I have been extremely busy lately I can still see a nice definition in her. Like I said I love Orijen foods.

Honestly Orijen and Acana both made by Champion Pet Foods are the leading high quality food for the US. They are locally sourced ONLY no out sourcing like many do. All ingredients are fresh and delivered daily. They are Canada based at this moment but are building a facility here in Kentucky between Russellville and Auburn.

Orijen is the best kibble you can buy.

Often times when dogs lick their paws it's a sign they are in pain, might not be from allergies.

A side note, I've noticed that the raw diet pretty much eliminates anal issues.

The reason I feel its food related is that when we put her on bland and/or put her back on the Puppy food, it goes away and she doesnt bother them. She constantly find a way to get back to my boys food. She is quite the little devil. Either way, I'd like to at least get them on the same food and we can go from there.

after several months on an off brand grain free food, i ordered 2 bags of Acana yesterday. i personally havent found another food that works so good with my dynamic duo.

as stated above Orijen and Acana are both made my Champion.... but i found the Acana to be a lil kinder on my wallet.

After putting my dogs (past and current) on Blue Wilderness, Taste of the Wild, and Wellness.....Orijen has been the only one that my dogs do consistently well on.

If your wallet can afford it, Orijen. If you'd like to pay less, but not sacrifice quality, Acana(sister company).

Chewy.com is a good place to buy Orijen/Acana. They'll knock some off the price if you schedule Auto Shipping too.

Feed per the bag recommendations FIRST, then you can add or taper off depending on activity level and weight monitoring of the dog.

I, personally, think the protein level is getting a bit high in Orijen.......but I am more comfortable with Acana's level, at least for one of my dogs. The other dog simply doesn't do well on higher protein kibble, so he is on something else entirely.

If you feed a bland diet and the dog clears up, consider the bland diet? Unless you can find a "working" diet that keeps the dog healthy and happy. We are sometimes complicated beings, but you are there with a watchful eye, but if you can feed to "clear up" as you say, then consider keeping him/her cleared up.

I decided to take her to the Vet today to just have a look at it. Better safe than sorry.

They gave me some antibiotics and said it appears there could be an infection. We're going to continue bland, do what the vet says and switch to Orijen.
