Smile First pitbull pup

Hello. I'm new to the site and just recently rescued my first pitbull pup. We currently have a Black and Tan coonhound and have had multiple dogs in the past (german shepherds, labs). The man who owned the mother neglected her and the pups, and our poor pup was infested with fleas and worms when we got him a few days ago. I was told that the mother was rejecting the pups, but who knows what the real story is.

Anyways, I washed him in dawn (he is only 4-5 wks old right now so I can't use commercial chemical flea medications) and he is now flea free. I also had him wormed (SentryHC Worm X DS) but it was only for round and hookworms. I know that fleas can spread tapeworms as well so I was wondering if you all thought I should worm him for tape and whipworms also? And if so which wormer do you suggest? We have an appointment with the vet in a few days but I wanted to get a jump start on this. Especially with all the roundworms i've witnessed in his poop since the worming!

Also, what food do you suggest for pitbull pups? I was originally soaking the kibble (Blue Buffalo Puppy) in water but he's been taking it dry the last two days. Do you think I should be giving a higher protein content like Orijen? I know they say too much protein is not good for young pups but I just want to make sure he's getting off to a good start after everything he's been through!

Sorry this is so long!! Thanks.

Welcome! The Blue Buffalo is fine for your pup. They aren't "large" dogs, so don't need the special foods. Blue Buffalo is what my Maggie got for the first few months.

Hold off on any more wormings until you see the vet. They'll check your pup for the different species and handle it. I can't recommend brands because I let the vet handle that for my own dogs, I don't do it myself.

You do know we need pictures of the snuggle bug, right?

Very cute! Typically you wait till 8 weeks to be able to worm for tape worms. I use one that has praziquantel in it. They carry it at petco and other pet stores. I'd wait till 8 weeks to o that one but I'd do the one you used now for those round worms. Glad you are getting a head start!
I do all vaccinations and workings myself

You can feed Orijen! It's the best good out there for dogs.
