Change in Eating Behavior - Worrisome!!

So we have had our pitbull for just over 1 year now. In the last two weeks she has gone from loving her food (and I mean JUMPING all over the kitchen when we put it in the bowl), to just sitting over it barely eating it. She will sit over it and when you come by she seems to be "guarding" it, but she doesn't show teeth, growl or do anything, just watches you.

We have another dog, a 12 year old basset, but they get along fine and we have not had any problems at all. ANY clue what may be the reason for the change? We can't figure it out at all! We will start picking it up after the 15 minutes like you all mention in previous posts, but ANY additional thoughts are greatly appreciated. She was literally just at the vet 3 weeks ago and got a glowing clean bill of health.

Thank you!
Kim

Thank you for reaching out.

We give her 1.5 cups of food twice a day: morning and evening. She was a rescue so they estimate her age between 2-4, so we are going with 3

Hello Kim,

Have you brought your girl to the vet to rule out a medical reason for her sudden loss of appetite? How is her general health as far as energy and being playful?

I would have some bloodwork done.

We did not but only because she was just at the vet and he was thrilled with her. She did not have blood work done, though. This seems to be behavioral, but then so can sickness. She is still her usual self on everything else, playing with us, playing with her brother, being in the yard, etc. It is just this one (important) thing that she is different on.

Is she losing weight?
Have you tried decreasing her intake?
3 cups can be a lot for a grown dog depending on the quality of the kibble. When Ecko was on Acana he only needed 2 cups a day. Any more then that and he would gain weight and be a chunker.

She is not, and that is not something I thought of trying! We will definitely try that to see how it goes. Thank you

My 70lb, active female is on 2 cups of Acana per day now. She was a little chunky on 2.5. So I agree that could just be too much food for her.

Thank you all so much! I am excited to try this and HOPE this solves the issue. She is far to sweet to have this worry. BEST DOGS EVER!!
