toenail help

My 1/2 pit 1/2 gsd has long nails &scared of having her toenails cut. Do y'all have suggestions on how to help us get through this issue? I've tried the spinning nail file too and that freaks her out too. Other than holding her down (which I think is counter productive) does anyone have any suggestions?

the dremel scares the crap out of my dogs. I would do the clipping in a relaxed enviornment while lounging on the couch, I fold the paw backwards and clip. Megan gave a great tip to me a few weeks ago, when clipping black nails to watch for a little grey circle... once you've seen that stop... give it a like 3-4 more days and repeat.

I'm sneaky, do it when they are least expecting it, asleep on the couch! lol That is how I do my puppies. Another option is having the dog stand and lifting the paw back and clipping the nails, kind of lick how you would clean a horses hooves. I found that many dogs who hate to be held down are more comfortable standing up like that. If all else fails I have my husband restrain the dog and I clip fast then it's treat time.

we use treats and belly rubs! To maximize my visibility, we have them belly up and they get pettings while we clip then treats after.....

try showing the clippers and letting them sniff, then give a treat. do this several times a day for a few days, then just let them sniff the clippers randomly without treats. Do a few nails then treat and wait 20 mins or so, do a few more and treat. It worked for us with our oldest. Some dogs seem to hate a foreign object being near them more than the clipping so removing that anxiety makes it much easier, IMHO.

i too do it while they sleep, even if i only get one paw done at a time.

i only cut nemo's twice, 6 mile daily walks do it for me.

try treats, or a bone or something that will keep attention for more than 5 seconds.
