Newbie with lots of skin issue questions!!
Hi Everyone! I am new here, and I am so glad I found this place. We rescued a 3 year old blue pit back in January of this year. She is the sweetest dog ever and we couldn't figure out why anyone would give her up. At first her skin was great and then as the months went on it progressively got worse. It started with a rash on her belly and then her back would have clumps of dry skin under the hair. I took her to the vet in the beginning of summer and was given fish oil to put on her food and an antibiotic. The fish oil they gave us did nothing for her. I ended up taking her back about a month later because her scratching was awful and she was starting to get open wounds from it. They put her on Tamaril (steroid)for 30 days. This worked great and within 24 hours she looked awesome with no scratching, however as soon as the meds were done it came back. Took her back to the vet and they decided to put us on the wait list for the new allergy med that is out (I forget the name) and put us back on Tamaril for another 30 days. I don't want her on the steroid because she doesn't seem herself when on it. I would prefer to try other remedies. I haven't gone the allergy test route because it will be over $400 and we have spent so much just in the 9 short months we have had her (she also tore her ACL a few weeks after we got her - but that is all better now).
I have read several posts on here about ACV, fish oil, coconut oil, and wanted to know more. For the ACV how do you give it? She is very picky and I can see her not eating if I put it on her food. For the fish oil is there a particular brand? Are they capsules or oil? Willing to try again if there is a particular brand others like. I also saw posts about honey....is this straight up honey?
She is currently on Merrick Limited Ingredient with Lamb and Sweet Potato. We have cut out all grains and poultry hoping that was the problem. I do think she has an allergy to grass, but without the allergy testing I can't be sure.
So sorry for the long post, we fell in love with our girl instantly at the shelter and want to do anything we can to help alleviate her itchy skin. I am open to any other suggestions you may have. I'll post a picture of our sweet girl if I can figure out how.
