New pitbull owner he's 8 weeks old Help!

I've been doing a ton of reading for the last month to get ready for Apollo to come home. Well he's finally here, and my biggest question is on food. The place he came from was feeding him pedigree and I want to change it. I know pitbulls are prone to skin and hip problems so I want to start him off healthy. I've read so many different things and don't know which way to go. Any advice and tips on food and any other subject would be greatly appreciated. All I have learned so far is he goes through toys quickly, he snores loudly, he loves to cuddle, and hates the rain. But he's house training awesome!
Thank you

Many here recommend Orijen, Acana, and Canidae dog foods and they all have good ratings. Good for you on getting him off Pedigree brand, it's just a lot of filler. I feed mine Diamond Lamb and Rice, good rating but a little less expensive.

Remember when switching to a new foods that it is a slow and very gradual process. Feed Apollo the Pedigree brand and add a little bit of the new food. Keep it about the same mix for a few days and then less Pedigree and a little more new food. You get the idea. In a couple weeks it can be the new food by itself.

Hey, welcome to the forum! Spend some time reading and looking around. Lot's of good information here and great people. When you get a chance start a thread in the introduction section of the forum. Tell us a bit about yourself and we would love to see some pictures of Apollo.

Thank you! I've been doing tons of reading on here. I have read alot about a raw diet? Not completely sure about it, seems likes it is good for pitbulls. I'll defiantly look at the brands you listed, now should I be adding anything into that? He's has became another baby to us and just want to everything I possibly can for him.

With a quality food like the ones I listed there is no need for any additive or supplement. Not that I don't treat mine with a piece of leftover something once in awhile but day to day they just get the dry meal.

Thank you, I'm going to wait a few days to start switching him. I have a vet appointment for him later today for his shots and to be dewormed. Picked up pumpkin today just in case, and skinless chicken breast and white rice to be on the safe side as well. I've seen that the shots and deworming meds can make for a messing situation.

If you mix rice with the new food it will keep his stomach from getting upset and you can start the new food immediately

Also diamond grain free is great food, they eat less and their body absorbs more so less #2 lol

If you're having some knuckling problems AND want to switch foods, I would highly suggest using the Taste of the Wild Salmon as suggested in the regiment to resolve the knuckling. My pups both LOVE it, it's good quality food for a decent price and I ended up switching all the dogs to it because they like it so much. The very first thing my vet said when my pups knuckled (both of which were pretty bad though it's hard to see in the pics) was to get them OFF puppy food and on adult food. The knuckling is a result of them growing too fast and the high levels of protein in puppy food vs. adult food just increases that problem. Good luck with Apollo!

Update! Started Apollo on Taste of the wild salmon this past Friday, he loves it. My husband swears he is already looking healthier, and not trying to be to detailed but even his #2's look better, not smush anymore. Today (Monday the 9th) is his first day on just TOTW, will start the regiment for the knuckling over tomorrow. We have all tile and hardwood floors so got a few area rugs (he's already trying to chew up)lol. But!! I had to go to 5 different stores and finally found the cod liver oil at GNC but just realised it's natural lemon flavor? I don't know if that will be ok? Or do I need to go back on the hunt?

I don't think the lemon flavor will hurt the recipe, as long as Apollo likes it. I had problems finding the oil too and eventually found it at The Vitamin Shoppe. Then I just ordered from Amazon after that. I went through bottles quick with having two dogs on the regiment. Glad to hear Apollo loves the food and is doing so well. My three all love it so we switch Ciara to it as well. I still have a bottle in the fridge just in case!

I went to 2 different stores to find TOTW, and then I could find tons of oils but not the right one, I didn't think of it until just now, but I should of checked at Trader Joe's lol. Well ill find out tomorrow if he likes the one from GNC with lemon flavor, maybe it will help the fish smell lol

OH that's a good point!! It might make him smell "lemony fresh!". I use Chewy.com for the ToTW. They auto delivery a bag to my house every two weeks. Their prices are the best I have ever seen, shipping is free, and super fast. One day I ordered a bag of food early when we were trying to figure out how often we would need it. Anyway, I ordered it online at like 3pm and it was literally on my front porch the very next day.

Be careful with the puppy foods. They are higher in protein than the adult formula's and can cause knuckling in some pups due to growing too fast. Just something to keep an eye on just in case! Doesn't happen to all but to some. I fed my dog before I got pits Wellness Core as well and agree it is a great food.
