Crash and his first Vet visit. Of course,.. it sucked.

Ok, I will start off by saying I was quite amused by the crowed Crash had drawn in at the office. People were more than pleased to hear his story and comment on how far it appears he must have come in such short amount of time. After a 15 minute wait do to a false walk in emergency ( smart way of butting in line ) I was finally in the exam room.

The Vet had a few positive comments on the pups condition after telling him hew was found as a stray and very skinny and loaded with worms.

Then he asked what I was feeding him, thats when the bomb exploded. I told him it was a rotation of Taste Of The Wild and FRESH raw ( rabbit and duck ) and the good comments went to bad. He preached his whole song and dance about why raw is the worst thing to do and I should be ashamed,.. blah,.. blah,... blah. He told me I should have him on SD, I told hm no thanks I have a kibble I am sticking to ( keep in mind I work for one of the few Pet Supply shops in the state ) and informed me that my choice being a Wal-Mart brand was no good for the dog. Then he went off about ecoli, salmonella, and raw bones being worse than cooked. Told me the pup was in poor shape and he is beginning to see why Told me he has slightly swollen lymph nodes, I asked why and he said cause of his diet. I asked about the curvature just above his paws and how they quiver and I explained that this only becomes present after exercise almost as if he gained to much weight for how skinny he was, like as if his lean little legs just couldn't bare his weight gain yet. He told me its cause of the food I give him.

He went from a well mannered guy to a guy that was hot headed and slamming around his drawers as he was looking for his equipment.

He told me the pup was not a Pit but a American Bulldog At this point I wanted the shots and everything to be up to date and I wanted to go. I was pissed! He asked me if he could take the stool and examine it, I told him yes. He took it back and left it sit and came back with a de-wormer. He gave the de-wormer, and never said anything about the sample. When I asked he said he needed to do the test and would call me. Thanks for taking me on that one. He calls two hours later telling me it was negative but already charged me for the meds.$$$$

I now find that the swollen lymph nodes and his trembling at the paws could go hand in hand along with something I have been questioning about his coat. He has a thinner coat between his ears and along his neck area, again this is something that google had to inform me of,... go figure a 94$ dollar visit to someone trained in the field couldn't. I will be seeking a different Vet for this problem as well as his follow ups.

I wouldn't suggest this jerk to a dying terrorist. He left everything short, I attempted to ask more questions but he told me in a snide way he would bring me A-meaning one singe article-on raw and why I should feel bad about the choice I made. He walked out of the room and left his dweeb of a Vet tech to answer for him.

WOW! He was completely rude, his personal opinion seems to have taken over his professional one! I would defiantly be finding a new one too. I applaud you for handling it so well!

Anyways sorry about your luck hun. Hope you find another vet

Thanks everyone, does my choice in a diet sound bad? I honestly believe it to be pretty good. He made it sound as if I am feeding him nothing but ground beef and cheap steak and pork. I told him I stay away from pork and know the bad stuff associated with it like parasites and all, might give him some fresh beef cubes for treats and I also have a very good source, my local butcher shop is great!

Once I informed him that my choice in raw is duck and rabbit he had a pause and I think he had to look back in his brain for some sort of rebuttal but after the brief pause he stated " doesnt matter ".

raw and kibble is fine as long as they are not given at the same feeding. TOTW can be too high in protein for some puppies and if you notice anything structurally wrong with the pup the best thing is to put him on a low protein adult food.

That vet sounded like a jerk and when I worked as a tech we had some vets like that. If you did not agree to what they said they tried to make you feel like an a$$. It is hard to find a vet you can trust, ask around and see what other recommend.

Well depends on the age of the dog. I personally, IMO, won't put a dog on raw till about 6 months old. Again that's my personal opinion. But nah, I think you're doing fine.

Because of BluePitMan I'll be giving the ol' girl deer this season! And I'll be moving to a Diamond or TOTW when she's older with a raw meal or two a week. And I think the majority will agree you're doing fine.

I lucked out with Sharen...my Vet. She's great and loves the fact that I'm going to move her to Raw eventually. She even said "I have to offer you SD, because it's what we sell"...HA! I love it

Not all vets are created equal. Do some searching around and ask what they think of things like RAW before even using them. You will however find most vets are not really versed on canine nutrition at all nor are they properly trained in it. many have little training if any on canine nutrition. You may want to look into a holistic vet or vet nutritionist.

well, there's no real reason to feed raw and kibble. TOTW is a fairly decent source for protien and you can easily be giving him a protien over load with the combo of adding raw. Which will cause tremors, knuckling, as well as other bone deformities. I feed the adult dogs raw, and the puppies an all life stages kibble... especially puppies.... they have different nutrition needs that i'm not comfortable meeting, personally.

I agree, find a nother vet. He should have taken the time to explain some things to you.

I definitely think it's time to find another vet. Call around town, ask people you know in town. If you work at a pet feed supply ask your clients where they go and their opinions on the vets themselves and their beliefs. Don't settle for less than you deserve, that's for sure!
