Exclamation pet insurance? anyone have it?

So i go to banfield for my dogs chekcup and whatever. we have the basic plan which we pay monthly. My dog gets sick (something he ate) and my bill is almost at 1500(xrays, tests, IV, pills). I argued with them why do i pay monthly if i still pay for anything that happens to him. and come to know the monthly only covers reg checkups and shots, not illnesses. sure they give me like a 10% discount on SOME things like the $15 pill but not on like the $40 xrays which they needed 5 for some apparent reason. so by the 3rd day im still paying 1500, which ofcourse is ridiculous.
So has anyone tried going throuhg a pet insurance in order to cover these type charges, especially since banfiled expects money upfront whihc is BS!
Im not looking for life insurance, more like health insuracne to help pay these bills or atleast cover the cost.
Someone please share some light i would really appreciate it.
I got a good quote from VPI pet insurance. hopefully it aint a scam...

I don't have pet insurance but I had looked into getting some. I noticed that there are two types you can get. One is just for health checks, shots, etc. but you can add to the policy for other issues such as being hurt and other things. That has to be added to your policy. Who ever you got the insurance through should have explained that to you.

I work for VPI, and just to hopefully put your mind at ease, we are the largest and oldest pet insurance company in the United States. Our first policy was actually for television's Lassie! I recommend reading our benefit schedule thoroughly to educate yourself on how much we cover for various conditions. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have, or you can visit our Facebook page to talk with our policyholders and get their opinions.

Yes - as each dog will have their own individual policy, they will all have their own deductibles. However, you would be eligible for a 5% discount when enrolling multiple pets.

Is 5% flat or is there room for negotiating on that? I've got a lot more than three dogs lol.

Cool deal, is it a 10 percent discount for every dog number four and over, or is it for all of the dogs?

I have spent a lot of time researching pet insurance and here are my findings...

VPI does not cover anything that can be considered hereditary or congenital.
Banfield's programs are basically a scam as they don't cover diagnostic or treatment.
I have PetCare (now 24 gour Petwatch) for my bulldog and pug. They cover hereditary and congenital illness. I chose a plan which reimburses 70% of all money paid up to a lifetime benefit of $12,000 per region (regions being like eyes and ears, skin and fur, legs, digestive tract, etc I think there are like 6 regions). Miko has Trupanion since PetCare does not cover Shar pei, and I plan to switch them all over as trupanion is cheaper and has better coverage. It covers 90% of money paid less the appointment costs, and I chose a $0 deductible. Neither plan covers well visits like check up and shots, but with petcare you can add it for a fee (it kind of costs the same as the actual visit, like 10-15 bux a month, but it spreads it out over the year). Both plans make you pay 1st and then submit a form for reimbursement. I have not made a claim with trupanion, but pet care is pretty quick and painless. My friend had VPI and she took her female to get spayed. Her dog had a bad reaction to the sutures, and started bleeding internally. After about $1500 worth of extra care, she got back about $90 from VPI because they considered the spay routine, and anything that stemmed from it was not covered. I think they only covered some prescription meds. She paid every month for 3 years and never made a claim, and the one time she needed it, they denied her. I asked both PetCare and Trupanion if they would have covered it and the answer was yes, they would have covered their % on costs above and beyond the routine spay and meds.

While VPI works well for many people, I would say if you have a bully it probably won't pay out because the issues I see most commonly with bullies are all considered hereditary, joint problems (luxating patella, and hip dysplasia, etc), and allergies and skin issues (my bulldog was covered for treatment for demodex, which some companies would consider to be hereditary).

Petcare gives a 10% discount for additional pets, and I think trupanion has a discount but I'm not sure. If you call trupanion and start your policy over the phone with a rep, you can ask them to waive the $25 start up fee, and they will.

I hope this helps.

It would be applied to every dog's medical policy.

We do offer limited coverage available after one year of coverage with the VPI Major Medical Plan, but like most insurance policies, we do have some exclusions that help keep premiums low.
