Question What would you recommend for a puppy's kibble?

I was wondering what some of you would recommend for a pup on kibble. Right now, we are on diamond naturals which is what the breeder had her on when I got her. I want to hear some opinions.

I recommend orijen and always will some complain about the high protein and although it may not be for every dog my dogs have all thrived well onit with gorgeous coats and no issues. However is there reason you are looking to change? is she not doing well on the diamonds natural? not sure how it ranks I know alot of people whodo feed the same thing. I have heard good things on Taste of the wild and blue buffalo although havent fed either so have no hands on advice with it. I know orijen can be very pricey compared to those so if price is an issue may want to check those other 2 out or acana which is the same company as orijen just a lil better on price.

I don't think that she is eating the Diamond Naturals very well like she was and she has been losing some muscle and weight it looks like to me since I first got her...

oh ok thats a fair enough reason to want to switch was just wondering why lol. They do go through stages as well were they dont eat as much and can seem like they barely eating the BAM they are lil piglets again and wont stop eating lol just so you know sometimes its normal but you shouldnt see weight loss in there down time. theres a thread on here if you use the search button at the top its a 'food comparison ' thread it shows how to rate dog food and alot of them are already rated might help in picking a good brand to try.

Diamond isn't a very good brand of food. Diamond was one of those recalled about four years ago when dogs were getting sick and dying. Taste of the wild is grain free but also put out by diamond. However, TOTW gets a great rating for quality. I fed blue buffalo wilderness with great results. I by-passed the orijen because 40% IMO is to high of protein for a non working dog. My girl is active so I switched her to ACANA which is 32% and the highest I will personally go.

Well how old is your pup? What is an every day exercise routine like? What kind of future goals are you thinking of? High protein is best suited for working dogs or high level dogs. (lots of exercise per day) Seeing this thread reminds me of the other thread on protein not that long ago completely forgot, i'll have to pull some information on protein and dogs.. Anyway.

If you are working your dog, or will be and currently have a fair amount of exercise..(depending on the age too) i'd recommend:
Orijen - 38 - 42% protein - $60 - $90 per 29.7lbs (Pricey, worth it.)

Evo - 42 - 52% (52% is for weight management, all else 42%) - $62 - $72 per 29.7lbs (again, also pricey but worth it)

Acana - 32% - 38% - $48 - $58 per 29.7lbs

Keep in mind that these kibbles are high quality on both protein sources and overall content therefore you would feed far less of these vs what your feeding now.

If your not working your dog but just want a good quality kibble you can also use Acana and go for the less protein formulas. There are many, many types of dry foods out there for non - working dogs that still have a reasonably high amount of protein and over all good quality feed... I can give you some options there if the above wouldn't work for your needs.

I have fed all of my dogs Diamond, it is NOT a bad food, not the best but not as bad as Pedigree or anything there of. I fed both litters of pups Diamond Puppy and never once had a problem. Now Odie on the other hand hates Diamond and I just had to switch him to TOTWE and add some puppy vitamins, I got Pet Tabs. He has a very sensitive tummy and the Diamond was just not agreeing with him. If you are out for muscle mass or anything the pup is still to young to be worked for that, wait til they are at least a year old and then start on a work out regimine. Good luck, everyone has their own opinion on dog food for sure.

Diamond isn't a horrible food but i would consider Diamond products on the poor side. Their factory is far from standard (at least it was a few years ago) and the quality of ingredients used is quite low. Can dogs do well on it? Absolutely, generally though if your dog can do well on Diamond it can also do well on other low end dog foods.

Another way of looking at is if you are spending $30 on a 40lbs bag lets say, after we take out manufacture and company you bought it's profit, we are left with say $25. (which is a very low profit % considering) Now lets take out another $1 for the cost of materials of bag, print, etc. $24 dollars is whats left.

Now lets divide $24 and 40lbs, that is roughly $0.60 per 1lbs of dog food. That is not a high amount of money going into the quality of ingredients, which reality is far less impressive. When i worked at a local pet store we carried Diamond products, the cost per bag for the store was $18.00 per 40lbs bag of regular Diamond, Diamond naturals was around $22.00, the actual cost of these were around $28 to $34 dollars depending on what you got. Now of that lets say a middle ground of $20, you figure the the company is at very minimal making $2.00 off each bag, every company is in for profit. So we are left with $18 which in return leaves around .45 cents for ingredients per pound of dog food.

Now lets look into a higher quality just for comparison, lets just say $70 dollars for a 29.7lbs bag of Evo. Using the same % for all intensive purposes; $70 - $7 (for both manufacture and company profit, used $5 originally) we are left it $63 which equals $2.12. Now reality is that figure is probably much closer to $1.25 or so but you get the idea.

Some of the highest quality foods are going to be in your range of $1.75 per pound, which if you consider when mass produced the difference between a .50 cent per pound and a $1.20 per pound is HUGE.

Not here to argue, just saying Diamond is not a bad food and when you have more than one dog, as you do and on a strict budget then it works, my dogs all had great coats and were nice and healthy and never once needed anything extra int heir diets to keep their coats that way, the ONLY reason Penny got Canisdae was due to her epilpesy and I switched her to a grain free diet. But guess what her coat and everything stayed the same as it did on the Diamond and there is more than one Diamond plant and the place where I got my Diamond food was not affected by the outbreak that happened, I will continue to use Diamond dog food, just not with Odie. And I'm done with this convo, there are more knowledgable people about it than I.

Wasn't trying to make anyone feel bad or to argue, just throwing out more information for thought.

Dog food is always a touchy subject as no one wants to do wrong by their dog, dogs respond differently and by no means is there one "end all be all" dog food out there. If you have good results on _______ than by all means continue that feed. No reason for arguing on the topic as one may have excellent results on Orijen, another Instinct, another Diamond and another Pedigree.

Quality may be cut and dry when it comes to further examining but by no means is there one food for all dogs.

I deworm her once a month with Nemex 2.
She runs around in the back yard with my son for about 2 or 3 hours out of the day.
She is going on 4 months old now.
Price isn't too much of an issue. I was just getting her what she had already been on.

Thanks for the feedback.

I would personally recommend Acana Puppy and Junior formula. 33% protein, roughly $50 - $60 dollars depending on where you live.

I look into pricing around here and see where I may be able to find that. Thanks.
I'm not familiar with the protein and all that and what is good for what types of dogs. I am new to all of this. That is why I am getting all the pointers and opinions that I can.

Thank you

I agree Diamond is not a great food but it is not a horrible food but on the lower quality side. I feed a grain food called Kirkland signature, it is from Costco and is a great grain food. It is 12.99 for 20lbs of puppy food, it is cheap but it is great quality. I have feed all my working dogs Kirkland for at least 10 years and they keep getting better.

Now if you do not have 20 plus dogs like I do and want to shell out more money you can go grain free. I love TOTW but not for a puppy food. I feel that dogs need energy content according tho their age and needs. All stage foods do not give the fat and protein a pup needs. There are some good puppy foods like blue buffalo that you can try too.
