Lightbulb Transitioning Kane's Food. Advice please.

I've had Kane on ToTW Sierra Mountain (lamb) formula since he was about 6 weeks old.

Kane is almost 11 months now and I want to transition him over to Orijen Regional Red. Now that he's a little older and not worried about the higher protein.

Kane is currently taking in slightly under 4 Cups of ToTW kibble. Likewise caloric intake of Orijen will put him just under 3 Cups of food a day.

I know its supposed to be better to slowly transition the food, but any rough advice? I was thinking a little under a cup of each at breakfast and dinner for 2 or so days then a couple days of mostly Orijen and a little ToTW then just all Orijen.

So roughly a 4-5 day transition period.

Not even sure if its really necessary his stomach is pretty bullet proof usually. Assuming he has no adverse reaction to the Orijen (which I doubt).

Anyways - any advice would be great.

I have always done the 4 day transition without any problems. 75(totw)/25(orijen)mix day 1. Day 2 50/50, day 3 25/75, and the 4th final day is 100 % orijen. Question for you--- how big is your dog? Reason I ask, My GSD gets 3 cups of food a day. Any pics of your dog?

Those splits seam reasonable Mach0. He's about 60 pounds right now. Let me grab a few photos.

Yeah he's getting about 675calories each feeding in two cups of ToTW. Two feedings a day.

So that would be 1.4 Cups of Orijen Regional Red each feeding for a total of 2.8 Cups total a day.

I give him about 5-8 Turkey Evo treats and a peanut butter filled kong as well. The occasional bully stick too.

We walk at least 3 miles a day (1.5 miles morning and night at least) and usually 4.5(two laps at night) so he's a pretty active little fella. In addition to him playing with his doggy girlfriend and anything else we do.

Anyways here are my most recent photos, not exactly the best for body comp though. I've been meaning to snap a few better ones.

These will have to do for now.

This one is him about a month to a month and a half ago.

Oh ok. From the pics, kinda hard without a side profile, he looks good. I was worried you might be over feeding. Good luck. If you run into loose stool with that ratio, you can try canned pumpkin and add like a tablespoon to the feeding.

I'll snap a few better profile shots tonight. But i'm pretty sure the only one i'm over feeding is myself. I'll spare all of you photos of that

  • Start out 1/2 old kibble and 1/2 new kibble for 3-5 days.

  • Get yourself some Pumpkin pie filler and add a tablespoon to each feeding as it will help keep the stool firm and your puppy should adjust easily to the new kibble.

When switching foods that are already grain free and a good quality food you should have no problem switching in a few days. The only thing that can happen with some of these foods is they can be too rich for some dogs. If that is the case you will notice soft stools that go on for over a week. If that is the case try going back to the TOTW. When selecting grain free foods I have found some to be too rich for some dogs, like the wellness and wysong I had issues with but each dog is different.

Few quick ones I snapped. He's 10 and a half months today. Not sure on his exact weight. Last weigh in a couple weeks ago was 60lbs even. I've been erring on the side of over feeding while he's still doing all his crazy growing! He's slowed down a huge amount though.

Now would be the time I fine tune his intake.

Head buried halfway through his food only way I could get him to stand still for me with the camera haha

I wouldn't worry about weight too much right now since he's going through growth spurts still--of course, if he's grossly overweight or something, I'd be concerned. But a few pounds here or there right now is not going to hurt him.

Also, every dog's metabolism is different. As long as you're paying attention to their calorie intake and smoothing a hand down their side every now and then (you should be just able to feel their ribs through their coat), you'll be fine. When Kane was ... Kane's age, he ate like a horse too. He was at 4 cups of TOTW every day too. Now, just recently in the past few months, he's started to cut himself back to about 2-3 cups every day. He's almost 20 months now.

Haha maybe its the name. I suspect Kane is actually Half APBT mixed with Half Pit Pig. Or Maybe Pig Bull. Or maybe just your old fashioned big ol bacon pig.

Anyways I don't want this thread to come across like i'm concerned about Kane's weight or body comp. Because i'm not. He's still a growing lad! just planning on switching him over to Orijen and wanted some advice.

I switched Kane to Orijen for a few months to try it out. IIRC, he was at 3 cups like you figured out, but I didn't see a noticeable difference between it and TOTW to make it worth it spending almost $40 more each month in dog food. But that was my Kane, and every dog is different blahblahblah.
