Daisy's current diet

Hey guys. So right now I'm feeding my two year old 1 cup of Nutro Max and 1 4oz Chicken Breast at night. Do you guys recommend changing it up? Nutro max is rated 3.5 stars but is kinda high in carbs, and I'm trying to get her to lose weight and gain some lean mass so I'm thinking of adding more protein to her diet. Any ideas? I'm REALLY tight on cash so please keep that in mind. I think I'm paying $30-$40 for a 30lbs bag.

Taste of the wild is affordable for alot of people. Nutro was one of those foods recalled about five years ago when dogs were dying from melamine. Plus TOTW is grain free so no added crappy fillers like corn and byproducts. Are you only feeding her once a day? Doesn't seem like much food. I would feed some in the morning and some at night. How much does she weigh? And, how much exercise does she get?

She weighs about 62 -64 lbs (last time I checked.. I'm taking her again tonight to weight her). I'm a bodybuilder, so I know how to but using a caloric deficit, and increased protein consumption. I just have NO idea how to figure out a dogs BMR lol.
Her and I go for a walk/jog every evening before I go to the gym for about 20-30 min.... and we have a game of Tug'o'war when I get home from work. And I feed her twice a day. The dry food in the morning and the chicken breast at night when I'm cooking mine.
TOTW is almost double what I'm paying now ($50 for 30 lbs)... I guess there's no way to get around the fact I'm going to have to fork out that much?

Last bag of kibble I bought was TOTW and it was only $46 for 30 lbs on MR. Chewy website. That's where I buy mine.
It's a better food for sure. WAY less carbs and more protein. Kibble takes longer to digest. I would recommend splitting it into both feedings. Do you have a treadmill? I have a bad back and can only handle so much physical exertion so I mill Ecko when I can't walk him as long as I think he needs. He's shedding his winter weight very quickly because of it.
These are just a few suggestions. Hope they help.

Thanks for the reply! No, I don't have a treadmill. I run at the beach if I'm not doing cardio at the gym. I may have to just throw the extra $20 into it and get her better food. She's definitely worth every penny. What I can do is mix a 4oz chicken breast in her food each day (2oz in morning and 2oz at night) with a cup of kibble at each feeding. And monitor her weight on a weekly basis and see where we are at.
So is TotW the highest protein/leanest food out there at a decent price? I hear it's above the quality of Kirkland and Diamond? Blue Buffalo?

Totw is a better food but its made by diamond. Same as kirkland as well. There are even higher protein foods you can buy like orijen but i would only feed real high protein to a working dog who is active all day every day. I wouldn't recommend a high protein diet for your average house pet also, nothing wrong with mixing some real meat in her diet as well. If you love your dog and care about her health as much as your own than throwing the extra $20 in for better food would be worth it i only have one dog so i never skimp on her health because i want her around as long as possible

Great! Thanks a lot! Yea she's my baby bully lol... And yea she's definitely not a working dog... lol Unless sleeping and watching me workout is work. But please excuse my ignorance, I really am sorry for making you repeat yourself. You said TotW is a better food and is made by the Diamond and Kirkland company. Did you mean TotW is a better food than her current diet?? Or that it's better than Diamond and Kirkland? Just want to know waht to look for while price shopping!

Yeah, let me rephrase that lol! TOTW is the better out of the three check this thread out to!

Blue buffalo wilderness and wellness grain free are also better choices as well. I like them because they are a smaller company. Wellness is a small company here in Massachusetts.

Shannon you beat me to it. LOL!!

That's the best way to do it. Sit in front of a computer for a couple of days and find what fits your budget and is best for your dog. It took me about a day and half to find the right dog food and three days for my cat. (he's diabetic)
Almost all brands have ingredients posted online so you can grade them. Keep good notes so you don't have to keep going back and forth.

Spent the entire work day researching.... best bang for my buck was TotW from MyChewy... With a 5lb cat food bag as well it came to $64. Almost double from Nutro Max but supplementing with Chicken I should be able to use a bit less and also give her some unprocessed lean meat to boot . Hoping for a boost in energy and coat shine!

You need to add omega 3s to her diet for coat shine as well as overall health. Omega 3s are pretty much destroyed during the processing of the kibble. If theres one supplement needed to add to a dogs dry diet its omegas cha-ching! More $$$ to spend lol! But worth it!

Lol! I love google! I'm bored at work to though lol! Just so you know I also give my girl a multivitamin as well. If you like to research things google "do dogs need vitamin supplements" and you can read all kinds of great info! I home cook for my girl because all kibble i tried gave her terrible allergies so i have been researching for over a year and even bought a couple of great books on dog nutrition. I care what goes into me and my childs bodies so why not my dogs too
