Question about dog fighting

BACK OFF LAW DOG!!!
It's only a historical question!

I wanted to know after coming here from Ireland and England was its a southern thing?
weren't they mainly fighting dogs down south in the begining?

I would think a lot were use for farming and protection back then and farmers kept it going for whatever the reason (I own a better dog, lets prove it mentality) I also think the more immigrants that came over the tradition kept going, cause it reminded them of the home left behind. Today many of us still practice our own types of traditions not to forget who we or where we came from. But why down South?

Well wasn't it over in Itlay that they put a bull and a dog in a ring? So I would think it would be where those people migrated too. They would keep their tradition alive.

I was talking more in terms of pitting two dog against each other in early America, but yes if I'm not mistaken the name corvino is Italian and the american Italian Migration came little a later. But thanks all for great answers, if anyone else care to post what they think I welcome it......I was thinking New York City was the port of entry for many immigrants I wonder if NY has an early history of dog fighting( I got to tell you, I grew up there but never really thought about that...too busy being a kid I guess)

I know you were talking about two dogs but it all started with bulls and dogs hence bull terrier.
