Unhappy need a home

Hey everyone. This is my first post to this site by the way. I have found myself in a real tough situation. I reside in Orlando, Fl and am currently looking for a new place. Looking to rent a house preferrably, but at this point I'm getting no luck, so maybe an apartment. My problem is my wonderful dog, she's a pit. People are acting like she's a disease, and I refuse to give her up. Now I'm picturing myself living in a cardboard box with my dog because I won't give her up. Does anyone have any advice???

I hate to say this but if you are having that hard a time finding a place to live with your pit you can either lie about what your dog is or offer to pay an extra fee for your dog every month to be included in the rent. I hope it doesn't come to lying but it's an option if it comes down to it or more like a last resort. I would keep looking though. Also, if your girl is a prime example of the breed offer to let the possible new landlord meet her for him or her self instead of just judging her because of what she is

if its short and stalky its an american bully short and sweet if people wanna argue tell them they're full of it and they clearly dont know anything about breeds.

but dont imediately tell people what she is. if she doesnt have papers then you dont really know what she is you only know what she looks like so the physical looks of your dog arent important because she could be a mix of dogs that arent american pitbull terrier or american staffordshire terrier.

with that said i dont condone lieing or deceiving people and i dont think its the smartest idea but if your intent on keeping your dog and finding a decent place i'd do this

tell them that its a mutt and your friends ca de bou got breed to a viszla because the dog hopped the fence when she was in heat or something like that. and if they ask for proof go to the vet and tell them the same thing so they put on the vet papers that its not a pit but a mix of 2 different breeds that may or may not get confused with a pit. but hopefully your landlord or future land lord isnt a dog expert.

NOTE: if you do this you should not call your dog a pit at all on the phone in public or in your own house especially in an apartment walls tend to be paper thin and gossip always travels, so from here on end (if you choose this route) she is a mutt, or what ever mix you decide to come up with that resembles a pitbull. if you do this stay away from american pitbull terrier and american stafforshire terrier i know its obvious but some times it slips peoples minds

heres a link of dogs that kinda resemble a "pitbull"

good luck with your search

Nor do I condone it just to make that clear. Though if I was having an issue finding a place to live it would be my last resort to lie. If it came down to me having to lose my dog because of what she is I would say whatever I had to. Half the pit bulls in our shelters here in Boston are labeled as boxer mixes but you can clearly see the pit in them. Just without papers it is anyones guess as to what you really have. So if it came down to it I would go with a boxer mix. Honesty is the best policy though so try to stick with that first and foremost

Good advice from others so far.See if you can't get away saying it's some sort of mix or other breed.
Where at in Orlando are you?I grew up there. You may have to look in places right outside the city limits if you can't find someplace.

maybe you could get a disability that you need a service dog for..... Service dogs must be allowed and cannot be discriminated against.

I do not condone lying either however sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

i almost forgot about that, emotional support animals dont reqiure any training besides being well behaved plus a perk on that is your pet gets to travel with you for free right next to you on certain airlines and on the train i think. you just need to make yourself seem unstable with out your animal but you need to see a psych for this.

At the advice of aids of my vet, they didn't classify any of my dogs as APBT's. Found out the area I'm in lists APBT owners on a file, and puts 'em under a microscope. IMO, it's not lying when you classify your dog as a mixed breed or Am Staff. What fools don't know won't hurt. It's a matter of "breed" discrimination, that's it. The disease is in the minds of others, and not you and your dog. Brainwashed by the media is a greater fault than hiding the actual breed from others...

Why not just stay where you're at, where you know you can keep her?

No not emotional support animal you have to have a letter from a shrink saying you have a disability. More like a medical alert dog would be better.

i'd think you'd have to have a letter from a doctor for a medical alert dog though right? i dont know much about it.

i think every one has some sort of mental issue from ocd to add to germaphobe ect. its easier to claim a mental disability than it is to claim a physical disability. im sure some one who is a recovering alcoholic could make a case to have a emotional support animal because it makes them feel like they have worth there for helping them stay sober. i also met a guy right before i left portland oregon who had an emotional support dog and we started talking how he did it. to say the least he told the shrink that he wanted to do something "dr. kevorkian-esque" (r.i.p.) and that his dog was the only thing that made his life worth living so his shrink started him with the emotional support animal thing.

Look into individually owned homes for rent. Some people are animals lovers and won't care what breed you have, but if you go to an apartment complex, or Realtor rentals you will be sent packing every time. Individually owned homes are at the homeowners discretion. Also, if you carry your own bite insurance a lot of people will change their mind about allowing your dog on property because they will not be held liable for the dogs actions.

I bought a house when I couldn't find anywhere that would let me have my dog. Let me know if you need a Realtor or a great mortgage broker. I'm in Rockledge about 40 minutes east of Orlando.

That is the reason I first joined here. Don't give up! I eventually paid $250 for an agency to find me a place, and they did so in less then a month!

The landlord was willing to give me and my dog a chance, even though my dog was over the weight limit and was on the breed ban list.

So it's not impossible,it's just very hard. Find a private renter. Apt. Will most likely all have the same code.

You are on the right track looking for a house. Also, let them meet your dog before you tell them what it is.

Make sure your dog is a good canine citizen. In fact, you might get him/her? that certificate,it's helped Bruno tones.

Also offer to get renters insurance. Just make sure you are well educated on the breed and can prove you're a responsible owner with a good dog, that's mostly what the renters look for.
