Pitbull Theft

I have been warned about pitbull theft in South Africa, especially in the Eastern and Western Cape provinces. It could be a nation-wide problem. There is apparently a syndicate that steals this breed for use in dog fights. We now have to lock our puppies away from prying eyes of these culprits who don't even give these pets good care.
Does pitbull theft happen in other parts of the world?

How would I let my pet roam freely in the yard in my absense without the fear of theft? I spend at least 10 hours at work, must he remain loced for 11 hours?

I am slowly getting tempted to let him be human aggressive for his own protection (though I am taking him for obedience training and socialization), else he will stay a prisoner...

What options do I have?

Buy chainlink dog runs and padlock them. Tattoo and micro chip your dog and make it known that you have done so. Spay and neuter them, they are less likely to be stolen if they are not intact.

I've always been a firm believer of not leaving your pets outside unsupervised.

I wont even leave mine in padlocked runs if im not there, I have seen how fast a lock can be cut. Simple if you are not home leave your dogs insisde in crates where you can lock up your home . This happens all over the world not just in Africa , very simple solution to it DONT LEAVE THE DOGS OUTSIDE WHEN YOU ARE NOT HOME. If you are still worried you can invest in security cameras where you can monitor anyone on the property as well.

About micro-chipping, won't they try to remove the micro-chip and thus hurt the poor animal?

I now leave Buddy locked in the garage when I leave. I feel like he is imprisoned.

micro chip will not do anything to find your dog the only time that will help is if a shelter picks up your dog and actually SCANS for a chip , alot don't scan or don't have scanners sop depends on who picks the dog up. The other thing it can be used for is if you find the dog in someone's care and need a way to prove it is your dog. As far as it keeping people from stealing your dog or locating after stolen it WILL NOT help you.

My dog is locked in my house when I leave, does that mean he is a prisoner!? Nope, just means I want him safe. How long are you leaving him for that you would prefer him locked outside? And I think you should get another dog that would be guarding your property and stop trying to teach you pit bull to attack humans. Get a breed that is bred for guarding.

Don't leave your pet out alone if no one is home. That'd probably be the best way to avoid any theft.

Thanks for the responses, much appreciated.

I have an enclosed yard but people can access it if they jump the fence or call him to the gate and thus lift him out.

I didn't want a guard dog, hence I take him through obendiance training and socialization. My concern is that is someone steals him, it is likely to be for wrong reasons.

I am at work for at least 10 hours in a day, often getting to 12 hours at times. I would love for him to roam freely within the yard, even in my absense as no one would access the yard except trough the wrong way.

I hope u understand my concern.

As a matter of fact, there are cameras around where I am staying, but they don't help when someone has their face covered.

I guess I have no option but to keep him locked (and he hates it).
Thanks.
