CGC Test

I feel very confident that Diesel is almost ready to take this test, the only thing that has me a little worried is the grooming part. He does let me brush him and when he does let me he enjoys it. But sometimes, ok most of the time, he thinks it's a game and wants the brush. I don't know if it's bc it's a wooden brush and he thinks it's a stick who really knows what is going on in his little head but whatever it is, he can't do that for the test. I'm hoping since it will be the evaluator brushing him and not me he may not try and go after the brush but there's always that possibility.

How do I break this habit of his? Any suggestions? It's a two sided wooden brush, one side soft bristles and the other side the metal bristles that would be used on a longer haired dog. He's not scared of it, he doesn't try to run or escape when I'm brushing him. I even showed him how I brush my hair lol I just don't know what else to do

I would brush him 3 times a day at least, and since you say he enjoys it, the brushing stops and you ignore him whenever he mouths the brush.

So, nice calm brushing until he squirms too much or mouths, then a negative marker (like nope) and turn away from him displeased and ignore him. Wait at least 10 minutes until you try again.

If he remains calm for a bit while brushing, reward with a nice calm massage and maybe a treat.

It shouldn't take long and he will be standing like a stone if you keep raising criteria and expecting him to remain more still. This is how I teach stand for exam.
