Truck Rides?

I always see dogs chillin in vehicles with their heads hangin out or standin in the bed of the truck chilling. I was curious to know how to go about training my pup to like doing these things? I just dont want him to ever jump out... thats my worse fear with lettin my pup do this. Of course hes still too young to go in the bed by himself but when he does get big how can i train him to like riding in the bed or in the cab with the windows down?

note - my truck does have a window that rolls down in the back so he can come in or go out to the truck of the bed while in motion. (nissan titan)

I wouldn't ever have your dog ride in the bed of a truck. you can get in a wreck and your dog will go flying!

However, you have to get a strong "stay" command going on with your dog t him to do this. Definately start the stay command at home and start changing up the distractions...I can go into a store for hours with my windows completely down with my boy Jarvis... I just tell him to "Stay" and he does... he has a staring problem which keeps him occupied lol...he enjoys watching everything that goes on around the vehicle.

I do NOT allow my dogs to ride in the back of my truck unsecure. I have two aluminum crates that I use for them to rid in. If I don't have crates there are tie down hooks in the bedliner that I use.

sorry man, doesnt sound like a safe thing to do. if there is debris on the road it could get in ur dogs eyes, or if u get into an accident ur dog is dead. idk.... not too safe unless they are in a crate and tied down. also, i know its illegal in CA to have ur dogs not secure in the bed of a truck.... u should look into the laws about that. out here its a nice fatty ticket

thanks guys!
i guess i didnt think this through that much. But you guys all have put out some good points. I definately wont let him ride in the bed of the truck secure or not secure.
But as for riding with the window down just a good stay command? He loves sittin on my lap when i drive and lookin out the window sometimes... but i dont want him to be a lap dog for long haha especially when im driving.

lil bit pit karma will become famous soon enough
Having your dog ride on your lap is not a good thing either or is having them hang their head out the window, you never know what they will see and take off and just think about what could happen if your dog jumps out the window when your going 35 mph! I would try to teach it to stay in the back seat they even make special doggie seat belts.

i really should get a seat belt for the pups, but I haven't. I let them hang out the window... Jarvis is like a little surfer dog he moves with the car...guess it still makes me a bad "mom"

I start my pups on a leash and tie it to the head rest. I give them just enough leash to keepthem off me, and inside the window. they pick it up fast. Ive seen trucks with an"I" bolt thru the center of the bed to attatch a short leash to. seemed to work o.k. but My dogs all ride up front

I roll the window down just enough for Zoe's head to fit through. She has a super wide chest so there are no worries about her pushing through...LOL

I've had a dog go right out the window after a deer. Luckily I was only rolling at about 15mph and could stop. No injuries but she rolled a time or two lol. Could have been really bad. I never roll the window down more than a crack.

I don't know... Car Manners are learned in my home before "sit"... the day I pick up a pup until they are around 6 months old they go everywhere with me... it also helped alot with socialising. I'll be honest... All three of my dogs have jumped out the window ONCE within the first 2 weeks of ownership so it's a pretty big jump and tumble for a little one(the vehicles were in park in the middle of a neighborhood road). Not one of them have jumped out of a window since... now they just jump in! They know "get in the back" if we need them to get in the back seat. Neela is the only one I would have to have an empty parking lot to have her stay with the windows down, but that's because shes veeery protective of the car so I roll the windows up until there's a crack to avoid a lawsuit.. i don't think she would jump out, but you wouldn't be able to walk by the window!

NIKKI is a jewel in the roughNIKKI is a jewel in the rough
My dog use to wana ride in my lap all the time. Once he got comfortable with riding he would sit on the psg side and eventually he started lookin out the window. i would crack it enough for him to put his head out and he started doing it on his own. fyi make sure you lock your windows!!!!!! i have a pathfinder and the dogs can roll the window down if they stand on the switch. trane did that last week while we were ridin he hit the switch and the window went all the way down i almost had a stroke.
