Should...

a 5month old dog have enough discipline to listen everything I say? This pertains to Remy getting up on the couch. Shes not allowed to be up on the couch. But she loves it up there. It sucks because when she's up there, she just lays down and acts good. Anywho, when we're in that room, she has nowhere to lay except the floor. We bought her a pillow, but now the other dogs lay on it. They get the couch too. So, her pillows taken, can't go on the couch. I'm losing the point of all this. I was told that Remy should be trained well enough to not go on the couch. Is this true of a dog thats still pretty young?

I wish I could offer some advice, but this is a battle that we have recently given up on.

Our dogs do know that they are only allowed up when we invite them up though. It's a matter of them knowing you are the boss and nothing happens without your permission.

I think that at that age a dog should know the basics of obedience and not being on furniture should be included in the do's and dont's along with where you can and cannot go to the bathroom.

chino stays off the couch and i use the same "off" command as when he tries to come up and jump on you. its just being consistent man... and since all of our pooches learn at a different pace, than just giving it some time will be the best answer. chino would love the couch but now he loves to curl up by my feet when im watching a movie!

Im sure other people will have some other insight to share with you. I am just grateful to be able to get through to my pup. a couple weeks back i was getting frustrated and I guess I expected too much. But recenly its like something clicked and i can even use motions alone with no commands. its been pretty nice!

Yes 5 months old is old enough to not have manners. I would not expect obedience commands at this point but the basic rules of the house like "off the couch" is a rule that should be follow now. I have many dogs and like 4 dogs beds in the living room. Now my dogs can get on the couch but they like the beds too. So if you need to give your pup somewhere to go since she cannot get on the bed. If you have 3 dogs and 2 beds..... time to go to costco (or the pet store) and get another one! lol

I think the problem is that there have been times that he can go on the couch, and the other dogs are allowed, so he doesn't know it's a solid boundary. I think I remember you having said your step mom doesn't allow him up, right? If you let him up even once or twice because she is not home, it will confuse him. You can work on teaching him to only go up when you invite him, but it will take a little more work to teach him the restraint. You can't expect him to know the difference right away. If you want him to not go on the couch ever, just to be safe, then you just have to be 100% consistent.

Let me clarify, if I tell her off, she will get off. For the sake of peace, I like letting her on the couch because she just lays there and behaves. About the beds, everytime we get another one, one of the other dogs ends up using it. Basically my stepmom is saying just let her lay on the floor. Obviously she doesn't like the floor. I'm not going to send any more mixed signals about the couch to her, in fact, I might just buy one of those huge couch looking dog beds and let her use that. Then just put it up if we're not in the room.

One of those beds that looks like a couch might be a good idea.

Thats what I'm thinking. I'm hoping the visual similarity is enough to satisfy her couch fetish.

I have theses folding corduroy chairs that my dogs LOVE! They are round, and pretty cheap, but they all try to trick each other out of the chairs so they can sit there, you could try just finding something cheap and folding to bring in when the dogs are in the room, and then the other dogs can lie on the beds on the floor, and your dog can sit in its chair, no one can say anything if you don't let the other dogs on YOUR chair.

We also have a moon chair for the dogs. They fold up and are not too big either.
