Pete Problems

HELP!!!

I have a 2.5 year old American Staff Terrier (Pete). He is very friendly with people and small animals (his best friend is a mouse). He also is very well trained and obedient....unless he's excited. If we're having a party, his obedience training goes right out the window. He jumps up to greet people and doesn't listen to me when I tell him "down".

But my bigger issue is his dog aggression. I want to make it clear that he as NO AGGRESSION TOWARD PEOPLE. He doesn't come into contact with other dogs much, and when he's on a leash he his well behaved, but this leads into my biggest problem....

I rent a house with 6 other people. We have a pool guy and gardeners and generally a lot of people coming in and out of our gates all the time. The housemates are very meticulous about not leaving them open, but everyone else (no matter how much we tell them to close the gate) forgets once in awhile. We can't fire the gardeners or the pool guy because the landlord hired them and wants to keep them. For awhile, Pete was getting out once a week! We were able to fix the problem (or so we thought) and he had gone 2 months without getting out.

Today, one of the gates broke. It ripped out of the wall because this house is really old. We've been asking the land lord to fix this gate for months because it looked like it was going to break. When Pete got out, he bit a large racing dog that was being walked by its owner. The dog seemed fine (it wasn't a bad bite) and I gave the owner my information but the owner said he's going to call animal control if he sees Pete again.

My question is, does anyone have any suggestions for preventative measures? We were thinking of putting a second gate up (kind of like the double gating system at dog parks), but I'm not sure how effective it will be or how to install a gate into concrete. Does anyone know how much it is to get a gate installed? Or where to call? And how well does training to get rid of dog aggression work? I am willing to pay for classes if it will help at all.

I am at a complete loss of what to do. There seems to be no quick fix (of course) but I'm afraid something terrible might happen in the meantime. If anyone has any advice, I would love to hear it.

Thank you!

-Tara

had the same problem with onyx. what i did was take him to the dog park...it is fenced in and has a track around it. i took him on buisy days and practiced at a distance. as far away as i could without him geting very distracted by everyone. and worked on basic ob from a distance as time passed he slowly progessed and when there was progress i took him closer to practice until there was more progress then a little closer...so omn and so forth...it wont happen within a day or two i can tell you that!

I'm sorry to say you can not train DOG AGGRESSION out of your dog. This breed was bred for dog aggression. I'm sorry that this is happening to you but you must understand that you just need to keep a close eye on your dog at all times. When these people are over you need to have a kennel that Pete can go in. You could also install a cable run and then you could tie him when he is outside.

Jess, did you mean to say Dog Park??? lol This guy is also having DA issues.

Mikado gave great advise... my other suggestion is long hand walks to get his exercise.

as stated before you will not be able to get rid of the da its them. What you can do and what many ppl have tought there apbts to do is "ignor" the other dog, training a focus on the handle and nothing else. It starts with a with a watch me command and so on. But this will only work when you are around.

as for your yard. I personally will not leave my dog out unless i am out, but if a fence isnt working and you want him outside id go with what mikado said

First fix your gate, next go to a professional trainer and work with dog aggression, while you cannot train it out of them you have some obedience issues you need to work on. You can also work on his DA and help it but it will never be "fixed". Also if you are gone from home and cannot watch him, put him in a crate while you are gone. That way you know he is safe.

That's exactly why I don't take him to dog parks.

Thank you for your advice. I just signed him up for an obedience class (with a professional trainer) that also deals with helping the DA issue. I have also started leaving him in the house while I am at work. He is very well behaved in the house and he (and I) prefer that over a crate.
