Talking Crate Trained!

I can't believe it but after a week of working at this about 2 hours a day, Jonezie now will go into her crate/"room" all by herself when I ask and doesn't whine (unless at 4am she needs to go). 12 weeks old and already house broken, crate trained and knows some basic commands...They grow up so quickly :'-)

***Sorry had a dad moment there***

Yeah, I never did it at night, just when I wasn't home till we had 2 accidents in a row. So she's crated now...

Yeah all I say now is "room" and she walks right into it.

such a good feeling when they actually like the crate at first your heart breaks a bit when you hear them whine (at least mine did) but the mentality of the dog is such that it needs its den. and the sooner we as owners realize that we are doing them a favor the better. now everytime i take Nahla anywhere i make sure that she is in her crate in the car. safer for me to drive and for her. glad it all worked out flowers keep up the good work

That is great! be ready for her to be good for a month or so and then she might start having accidents again. Not all dogs but some dogs will be fine for a while, then make some mistakes, then get better again.
Great job on crate training!!

It is an amazing feeling! I forgot how much fun it was watching them grow up.

Performance: I think the accidents are because the people that owned my house first (just bought it 2 months ago) kept a dog in my spare bedroom all day...so I think the carpet might have a smell of "bathroom" on there, because that's where both the accidents were. Obviously as humans we can't smell that keen.

The crate is the best thing to ever happen in our household. We have 3 dogs. Brutus never was crate trained so he get free roam of the house all day. Loki was crate trained from 8 weeks and will go to his crate on his own for quiet time and on the command "crate". Lady B was crate trained at 1 year when we obtained her from my in-laws. She now knows the command "go to bed" and has the schedule down where most of the time I don't even have to say it, she just automatically knows to go there in the morning when I am getting ready to leave for work.

It's a great feeling!

I am super stoked!

And last night was one accident on the hardwood (thanks Lisa for jinxing me :P). But she went to the crate a couple times today while I was doing yard work. Such a doll she is!

yeah the accidents happen once in a while. you cant really blame them its like a little kid. there are usually some warning signs like sniffing or roaming around. i am sure that you have it under control though.

Soooo seeing that you were successful with your crate training. (Congratulations by the way) I'd like to know the thread were the directions were posted. I have a black lab that is 2 next month. She was so easy to crate train. But my pit, which i JUST got today is winning my heart with her whine every time i put her in the crate. lol. So i pull her up on the bed and she knocked right out and that's were she is currently at as i type. Is there a method? Maybe heavy duty ear plugs and a doggy sleeping pill? lol. jk. Congrats again, I hope my little girl is catches on as quick

when Bernie cried in the crate is because he wanted to eliminate he has been with us for almost two months and not once has he peed or pooped in his crate. We got him at 8 weeks old and now he is almost 4 months old and he has never had an accident in the crate or in the house really. IF he needs to go out to pee he sits by the door waiting for us to open it. When he has had enough he walks to his crate to take a nap all by himself.

A good website is "http://www.inch.com/~dogs/cratetraining.html" to go by.

My success came when I started to feed her in the crate. She started to enjoy going in there. Plus I treated her each time.

As for the whining...she's a baby and she wants to be close to you...she's going to whine. You'll just have to ignore it...she'll eventually fall asleep. But you can't acknowledge her at all...don't speak or tell her no or plead with her. She'll get it. It just takes time. BUT DO NOT take her out when she whines...She'll assume that she'll get what she wants.

OH...big note here...Be sure the crate is divided so she only has enough room to lay down and that's it. Dogs won't go where they sleep so if you limit the room she won't go in the crate. Mine has a divider I use...might want to look into one. Petco has them for 100 (that's the 42" big boy!
