Clicker Training

Anyone with any experience? I know someone is going to have an opinion at least! I finally got a new treat pouch and used it during our walks today. Nala responded VERY well. She is very food driven. Kaos knows the deal and comes to me and sits and stays and does every trick he can (except lay down sigh) until I give him a treat lol. He is definitely a con artist. But Nala did well with listening more and less barking/aggression on lead. I worked her with sits and stays and started working on a 'focus' command with them both.

Nala is very food driven and she needs the most work so this will work. I'm all about positive training with corrections when needed. My training has always been with choke collars (used correctly of course) for corrections and mostly food/treats/praise for positive reinforcement but having the two of them together I want to try something that will work for both. Curious about clicker training and wonder how well it will or won't work in a two dog situation.

Thoughts?

Yes! I use clickers for various things. I love them most for specific behaviors, like stacking. I have switched to "yes" for hand stacking, because I don't have enough coordination to click when I'm holding down a hock, and a clicker would be distracting in the ring.

Here's a wonderful site to get you started... Karen Pryor is IT when it comes to clicker training methodology.

My initial thought was for Kaos to use with agility training but after thinking about it today and watching Nala's reaction to the treat pouch I thought it might be worth a go for both of them. Already beat you to the site and have been doing some reading. I'm familiar with the basics but want to read more and refresh before I start trying to do anything.

I guess my concern/question is this: Can I do it successfully with both dogs being in an apartment environment. I don't want to be clicking for Nala when she sits or stops barking or whatever and have Kaos think HE's done something right. Does that make sense?

You would have to separate them for a while, when training. I know it's a pain in the butt, but maybe setting one up in a crate with a frozen chicken foot would buy you 5 mins to shape a behavior. And teach the one in the crate to settle while you work the other. Dual purpose! I have always clicker trained one, while the other is nearby in a crate. They are smart enough to realize the difference, as long as they are entertained otherwise!

It's not a big deal separating them in the house, they don't act stupid in their crates - it's walking them separate that is a pain because whoever I'm not walking cries and acts a fool in the house while the other is out. They are fine separated in the house or even when Nala had her surgery, Kaos was fine. He didn't cry, look for her, etc. but I guess when I take one out the other thinks they're missing something and acts a fool. But then again, Ciara used to bey terrible if she wasn't with me - even if I was just sitting outside talking to a neighbor, she would bey if I took too long so some of that is probably a learned behavior (especially since the ex couldn't deal with listening to her or bother correcting her so he would just send her outside with me). I also read that it can be beneficial as the one can learn while the other is doing resulting in faster learning/shaping. We saw that with them and Ciara as well. In fact, most of what Kaos knows command wise was picked up from watching Ciara. I had to do very little 'training' with him for somethings.

Seems like it would be a good solution for some training time inside since I no longer have easy access to a yard! I just bought new Kongs for them since the old ones got left behind. Sounds like the perfect time for a frozen, stuffed Kong.
