Persistence, perseverance and patience

Finally paid off! Kaos is a rock star. He knows his sit, stay, down and come on command. Nala FINALLY got the down! Wooo hoooooo!!! She’s got her sit and now knows stay, come and down. They still need practice but by golly she’s got em! So proud of my bulls I could burst. In 3 short mos we moved, acclimated to apartment living and not having a yard, made tremendous progress with barking and leash walking and are finally make great progress with our obedience. I haven’t been as consistent as I should be or it probably wouldn’t have taken this long but it’s all finally paying off.

Kaos is fine but we’re not even close with Nala yet. Still working in training situations with her but she is making progress. Fortunately for me they always stay together and Kaos does well so I can let them romp and not worry about her taking off in safe locations.

It may seem silly or NBD or even that they should be way more advanced than they are but the three of us have been through a lot the past few mos and I had to start over from scratch during a stress period so the progress we’ve made together is tremendous.

Congratulations Jess! Good to see you happy and glad they are both doing well. You and the DD have been through a lot and are making great strides in becoming whole again. I'm impressed by all of you.

No it's very good, I spend everyday with thunder because I'm going through work cover for a back injury and not working, so training most days and hes good but won't do a really long stay or if a fly is flying around he just switches to catch mode, he doesn't listen to me in distracted situations, sorta does sit and if no one's around he will come sit stay in New places, but if someone else or children are there I get nothing until hes calm again he loves children lol, but if who ever he's looking at or meeting says sit stay down he will respond to them haha

Thanks Joe. We have been through it that’s for sure and it’s not over but we are getting stronger and they keep me going! And we just had our first successful nail trimming session. For the most part their nails are fine from all the asphalt walking but they needed their dew claws done. Nala could care less as she’s so confident but Kaos is such a pansy sometimes. He still has his rear dew claws (coming off when he gets neutered) and he let me do them without a second thought but the second he sees the clippers he panics but we got those front dew claws with little fanfare! We are back to the vet tomorrow with both for follow up visit and cultures. Fingers crossed the good news continues!!!!

Distractions are hard. Work one command at a time until mastery in a training environment then move it to distractions and change locations. Kaos lesrns fast and is VERY eager to please me. Nala beats to her own drum. She’s smart but stubborn and wants to do what she wants to do. I worked mostly Kaos first because he was so easy and Nala has learned from him. Because they are littermates and stick together they pick up a lot from each other. Fortunately mostly good. I have not worked Nala in a come or a stay specifically at all. All she’s picked up she’s gotten from watching Kaos and following his lead. And they both benefited and learned from Ciara who was VERY well trained. Ciara taught them steps literally. We were working on steps and Ciara, in her own, starting going up and down to “show them” and they both followed her lead. Even though it’s difficult to do individual training with two dogs there are definite benefits to it as well. Keep at it. Like I said in my title, persistence, perseverance and patience are the names of the game along with consistency (something I haven’t been very good at with so much going on).

Thanks for the advice il definitely try, most of his understanding comes from living on a big property connected to state Forrest, I haven't finished a fence yet so he knows not to go to far and I'm always calling him and making him sit and stay and get out of the way for cars trucks and machines that are coming in and out to work on the house he's never too unsupervised but he's good, he will do a sit out of the way as soon as he hears an engine, in the beginning even one's driving past and aeroplanes flying over haha. I got thunder doing lots of funny ones at home just to keep his mind occupied, like getting shot and playing dead, woof, shush"
(sit down shut up is what he makes it look like lol) cover me where he watches my back in a heel, left spins, right spins like a cattle dog, before he started to listen to my command only, he would bang them all out in a row in hopes one would be right and he would get the treat lol, I thought wow I difinately had him overloaded at the beggining

I'd prefer if he knew the basics better in public rather then all that but it's fun, I think being so young is still a factor in his public antics he will walk by people and dogs but if he's gonna greet them he turns into one of the wiggles

Sounds like you have a good handle on things. Training the tricks is fun so I don't blame you there. It's hard to transition the training to other areas without practice. Dogs can master commands and skills based on routine and training in the same environment fairly quickly with consistent training but without taking the training sessions to different places with different environments/distractions, it doesn't always readily transfer.

Dogs are such opportunists! They know you want them to do something in order to get that special treat and they will try every single trick they know, usually in rapid succession, just to get that treat! That's when you know you need to start randomize the treat giving for obedience so they know to obey regardless of whether they get the treat or not. Gotta keep 'em on their toes for sure.

Haha yeah I love the quick do everytrick in the book haha and at the end he just plays dead like am I a good boy?

I spent about 5 or so years learning about dogs, dog psychology, training and all this information online. All the good stuff and all the bad asking other owners opinions, because I've seen a lot of dogs who people have given up on who I now understand why they seemed so out of context. While I have seen very few really well trained dogs, altho me and my maltese shitzhu had a great understanding most of that came naturally from being around each other for 16 years he didn't learn many or any tricks as I was too young when he was a puppy to understand. I probably wasn't 100% ready for thunder, still have questions and recheck information but I couldn't let a pup like thunder end up with someone who might not train him and blame him later when he would become a mastermind devil I new what I was getting into getting a more challenging breed. seeing police handlers getting there dogs to drop in the middle of a chase even for a toy was the moment I realized I really wanto put in the effort it's not the animal it's the owner
