I don't think its right to hit a dog for the fact of not understanding....! However I know I have hit Akasha at least a couple of times, mostly for chewing shoes, but I did a couple of times when she was being potty trained.

I realized the "shoes" was my fault for leaving them out, so we got a container for them. However for the potty training, I tried to make it fun. We started putting her water up, if she was just around the house playing. Anytime she was really active we'd give her a little water, or as soon as we get back from an active morning, afternoon, or evening run in the yard. Of course during the summer may be hard to do that, because of possible dehydration....! Whenever Akasha comes inside, we started giving her meatballs as a reward after going potty. These were special meatballs with Peanut Butter inside ~ She loved them, and sometimes we'd add a special doggie treat inside with the PB.......Now everytime we come inside she wants one and knows she only gets it when she relieves herself outside ~

Pats on the belly or bottom also work for her, she loves getting her pats ~

go back to the beginning. take him out on the leash. watch him do his business and praise him LOTS. when you catch him goin in the house let him no its bad- NO or BAD DOG and pick him up right away (george will finish peein in place if i don't pick him up) and take him to where he should pee. its no good punishin pups unless you catch them in the act. they're like 3 year olds with add. 3 seconds later they forgot what they did and are on to the next thing to destroy and constant CONSTRANT supervision. george is gettin better but if i haven't seen him in a while i have to check his favorite place to leave me presents- the laptop case around the corner. so cute. grrr. lots and lotsa praise when he does good and punish when u cantch him in the act. they are such pleasers they wanna make you happy more than life. such precious pups.

Could you describe how you have potty trained him thus far?

Explain everything you do to try and make sure he understands. When you take him, how you correct him etc. That way we can try to narrow down what could be improved upon.

Well I'll play with him then crate him so he can rest and not get into anything..Then once he comes out the crate we go drink then outside...Then we come in i'll let him run around a lil and within 5 minutes he pee's so I"ll say NO bad dog..take him out walk around a lil then we come back in...Then 5 minutes later he may pee again

How old is he? peeing that often can be behavioral (marking) or he may be ill. You should have the vet check him for a UTI.

Is he eliminating when you take him outside prior to going in the house, or does he not go when you take him out? If he isnt going right away, you may need to either take him away from distractions, continue revisiting or simply stay until he goes and learns to associate that when you go outside the first thing expected of him is to pee.

Typically its recommended that you take a dog out after sleeps, excited play and eating/drinking. It depends on how old the pup is too, as they get older they can hold it better. Id also recommend letting him out relatively soon prior to putting him in the crate, that way theres no chance of him going in his crate.

Do you take him the same general area when you want him to pee? If not I recommend it. Try seeing where he likes best initially, then keep revisiting that general area until he associates it with his eliminating area.

Are you catching him in the act when you scold him? When this happens pick him up and take him to his pee spot. Keeping a keen eye on your puppy and where it wanders is a good way to prevent accidents and build associations. When he even motions towards a crouch, pick him up and take him outside.

Last but not least, clean the house so it is smell free of excrement! A way to a dogs heart is through its nose. You'll notice if you can find an area another dog has gone your puppy will be more than happy to go potty outside!

All the best

I make the meat balls, and boil them just enough to have a hard shell (they are still a little bit raw inside. I then make a hole in them big enough to slip a little bit of peanut butter in them. Sometimes I crunch up her treats and add them inside with the Peanut Butter. (this gives her the raw meat she needs to break down whatever is in the stomach. She doesn't get sick off of these either, because they are in moderation.).

We did the treats for going potty, but then she started expecting them each time she came inside. She started getting really bad diarrhea and not eatting her food. So when I started her on this, it was in moderation and only 2x a day. She gets one in the morning and one in the evening whenever she relieves herself. Be warned though once you get them use to treats like this, you have to either take the pup off slowly or train her without. Its addicting !! lol

Mine learned with the rewarding outside. Now when she poops she always looks at me like she's expecting it(I do it less now).

When she was younger I let her around the house watching every second waiting for her to go, when she starte going I would yell NO! pick her up and carry her downstairs to finish, then rewarded.

She is 16 weeks and has been doing great, very little accidents but I blame myself as sometimes I just forget she's had so much water.

Also, how old is the pup? My pup hated it when it was cold out and she would just shake and not go until we came in. She has gotten over that. Last time it poured rain she was scared to go out too.

I say try the treat when she goes out, and keep an eye on her always! You need to catch them in the act and ush them out.

The poops are easier as you can catch the pup and startle him and for him to hold it in while you go down.
