Yeah, I figured that about little dogs but why would large other breeds have this same issue? uneducated owners most likely?

I think Zenith was potty trained at 5 months or so. Small dogs I heard are hard to potty train because they are hard to see if they sneak off somewhere and do their business.

Edit to add:
I had a small dog for a while and that dog was the hardest thing to potty train. I'd put her outside in the morning as soon as I woke up and she wouldn't do her business. I'd leave her outside till afternoon time to try and get her to go. There'd be no poop in the yard and as soon as I brought her in she'd try and go. She had to be outside all day and in a crate at night. Or house poopy for me.

Oh god this is embarrassing.... I think it took us nearly 6 or 7 months.. Yeah... I lived in an upstairs condo... on the 2nd floor... so I had to go down 2 flights of stairs to run her in and out... and I was..... lazy.... Also I never spanked her, or rubbed her nose in it. I used to "Opps" method when I caught her in the act and redirection. Not that she was going ALL THE TIME up to 6 or 7 months... but she still had accidents, mostly just pee. But now she's the most reliable ever, she has an iron bladder. She had one accident last year and the year before that one accident, both those times her tummy was upset though and she doesn't let us know when shes got to go.

I have a lot of clients that have problems potty training their little dogs. They let them dance around and run from their owners and then when the dog poops and the owner runs after them they think its a game. also, they ARE small so esp when you are training you have to take them out often. I wouldn't treat a small dog any different than my "bigger" dogs.

We had a small dog when I was a kid.. he was fully potty trained. He did the "potty dance" to let you know he had to go out. The little dog my mom has now... she got as a rescue when she was already an adult.. that dog has never been fully accident proof. Everytime she brings her to my house she goes on my floor, she runs and hides to do it. When my mom stays with my sister the little dog goes and poops on my little neices bedroom floor!

My German Shepherd mix, Tonka was potty trained (crate) at 4 months old. I adopted him at 3 months old.
My Am. Bulldog mix, Keona is still working on it. She'll be 3 months old Wednesday (2/24). She's been asking to go out most of the time for the past week and had no accidents the past 2 days, so she's catching on.

My b.f. had a chi that refused to go outside. Worst dog ever he even put in a doggy door and she would poo right next to the door. ugh she was like 4 or 5 and still did it so she went to live with friends.

Anikas_Mom is an unknown quantity at this point
Anika is almost 3 months, and is halfway there. We use a crate at night, and while we are away. We are taking her out about every hour or two. As long as we are taking her out she usually doesnt have accidents, but if we mess up..she will. I am hoping another couple weeks and she will really "get" it..that you have to potty "outside".

Ryker was almost 18 months before he was reliable. He had an...er..unfortunate upbringing because his breeder kept a FILTHY house and allowed the puppies to make messes where ever they pleased. I didn't really know it until after I got him from her - thankfully, she's no longer breeding.

Lyric, she was clean in her crate but had potty accidents in the house even with consistency until she was about six months.

Duo, our rescue boy, is also clean in his crate but occasionally has accidents. He's 5, so not sure how he was reared.

Luna, she was our easy one. I'd say she was 8-10 weeks (we got her at 4 1/2 weeks) once she was fully potty trained.

Thrall was trained by 4 months, no accidents after that. Lady was probably into 5 months because we got her at 3 1/2 months and that was when her first house training started, so within a week she was getting it, but had the odd accident late into 4 months, almost 5 months. She also had a UTI, so I'm sure that didn't help.

Raisin is a dirty dog, so she was much harder to housetrain, and in the bad weather I still find an occassional poop if we go out and leave them alone. She hates rain, snow, wind etc. Raisin is also much pickier about where she goes, and will wander the yard for 20 mins, circle for 10 mins, not go and start over, yet when she was younger she would poo in her crate and then lie in it. We would take her out, put her in the crate, and literally 3 mins later smell the poo. She came from a breeder and was never in a crate before we got her (as evidenced by the 1st night of screaming and trying to get out). When we realized she had a problem, we got a second crate, and if she pooped, she went outside, then got put in the clean crate and we cleaned the other, so there was no reward of getting out for pooping.

My 2 big dogs were never treated any different, as I have always believed little dogs should be treated the same as big dogs, no spoiling. In fact if any dog in the house is spoiled it's Thrall, but he's easy to dote on because he such a good boy.

Raisin will poop in the house if she has to go and no one lets her out, like at my moms where theres no dog door. We went out to lunch and my mom had to go out, and locked her in the laundry room. When we got home there was a turd on the floor. She NEVER pees inside, ever. Just poo. Raisin is particularly dumb. I have no idea if all small dogs are dumb, but Raisin is like the Forrest Gump of the house. Sometimes I watch her struggling to process things, she furrows her little brow lol. I have seen chihuahua's that seem to be pretty on par with Lady as far as smarts so I guess some little dogs are smart, but not Raisin lol. Perhaps it's just pugs :-)
