need some help with possible HA???

i have never had a dog act like this and am looking for all the help i can get!!

Nytro was at camp, tied up, as those are the rules. this is nothing new for him, he is always leashed when we are out because he has a need to wander.
the problem came when people would walk toward our camp.
Nytro would bark and even growl at these people, he even did it to my husband and son when they walked up with firewood!
he never showed teeth or even raised fur, he just barked and growled. he even did this when i took him for a walk and someone came out of the toilet as we walked past.
heres the thing, when these people walked all the way up to him, all he wanted was some pets and to play!! WTF!!

i don't like when people make excuses for HA, to me it is just plain unacceptable, but i don't even know right now with this dog. he never once tried to bite anyone, but he had no problem barking and growling at them. my biggest peeve is when he barked at a little kid, he has never had an issue with children, and again, as soon as this kid came all the way up to him he was ready to play.

Nytro is about one and a half years old, could this be a phase? or could it be a precursor to something worse?
Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Sounds kinda like he got spooked. Are these things he's normally around? My dog used to get spooked if the trash can was overfull. You should try socializing him more. Taking him out and letting him see lots of different environments and praising or giving treats when he's calm.

Nytro has been going everywhere with us pretty much since got him (he had a few weeks of inside time until his shots were up to date when he first came to us a year or so ago).
this was definitely not his first time camping or even being at this area with us. this is one of the first places we took him camping, and he has been there multiple times. he also goes on regular walks, admittedly not always around large groups of people, but he does get out around people.
could it maybe be a territorial thing?
again, he has never had an issue with a person who walks up to him, it is just when they are walking around his area.

My boy is the same age as your dog, and does the very same thing. I think it's just being protective, not aggressive.

Whenever I have taken Bullet out camping, he will do the same thing if someone walks up to the camp site, and has even done it to me and people he knows until he realizes who we are. It never lasts though, as soon as the person greets him, he's all play. The only time Bullet ever continues to bark and growl is if it's dark outside and he sees someone or something approaching, but again only until he realizes who they are. I usually don't get after him if he's being protective in the dark, because we have a heavy bear population where I live, and I definately want him to let me know if he sees something in the dark!

I have also taken Bullet everywhere with me ever since he was a puppy, but it is only when he is in an unfamiliar place when someone approaches that he acts protectively. When I take him in the truck or on walks, he's almost always happy to see anyone, stranger or not. And the rare times I have him off-leash when we are out camping (only when I know we are the only people and dogs around), he is fine because he can go greet the person. When he is tied up, he tends to act more protective, which I think is because he can't go anywhere, so he is warning any "intruders" to stay away, which from your description is what it sounds like your dog is doing. It's pretty interesting how their attitudes can change in different situations.

There are still times though, that even in a familiar place, such as at home or in the truck (where he is normally quiet), he will act protectively towards what seems to me like a random person every once in a while. But like I stated earlier, they are excellent judges of character, and you never know what their reasoning is not to like certain people. I always trust my dog's judgement, for his dislike of certain people has been proven true in a few different situations!

Unless your dog continues to act protective when someone greets him, I wouldn't take it too seriously. On the other hand, if it's a stranger approaching and your dog acts more protective than usual, I would take that as a sign to not trust that person, as dogs are unbiased judges of character.

You did say that your dog never shows teeth or raises fur, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I would continue to monitor the way he acts, and if he starts to act more aggressive than protective (such as continued barking/growling/hair raising/teeth baring) when someone greets him, then I would start to worry. You are right, there are no excuses for HA, but IMO, your dog is being protective, not aggressive. He's protecting the members of his "pack."

Sarge did something similar to this recently and the night before he had been scared by a mouse in the house... Maybe your dog saw a wild animal that freaked him out and he wasnt going to let it catch him off guard again...????

I sincerely doubt your dog is HA, but there are some concerns as an owner that you should have.
If you continue to take the dog out into public you will have to be extra cautious. A stranger or passerby can cause an ENORMOUS amount of trouble for you with an erroneous story involving your dog.
I wouldn't let a stranger ANYWHERE close to my dog.
I have a feeling that "guard mode" might be coming into play if he is being tied up (as he should be of course) around your campsite.
I know my dogs act totally different when chained on my carport and not in my house. On the carport they seem to think they have to be "guardy". In the house? Nahhh.

BestDogEver is an unknown quantity at this point
Your dog likely growled at your husband and son since he did not initially recognize them while carrying firewood. I'm sure once he realized who they were he was back to his normal self. Correct?

It doesn't sound like aggression just as if he might be warning you people are coming.
Tiva barks at everyone we go by. She's just talking though.
I would definitely try the video if you could. But seriously watch for warning signs of the problem worsening, or teeth showing, fur raising, lunging etc. And then to be honest I would consider putting him down. But at this point it just sounds like he wants to let you know that someone is coming.

And if that really bugs you, I don't personally believe in bark collars, especially if the dog is just trying to do what they believe is helping, you can try other things. I do understand that barking or growling may make him look aggressive, and may cause some issues for you, beause people who don't own the breed tend to be a little ignorant lol. So you can use a spray bottle of water and a firm no. It works for our dogs. But sometimes that doesn't work, in which case you could try a citronella collar. It sprays some citrus stuff at the dog when thy bark, and I've seen them. They seem to work really well and it doesn't hurt them at all, just tastes gross lol

thanks for all the replies!!
the more i read on here and other places it does sound more like a gaurding issue. since he is still fairly young i am hoping that we can narrow down the occasions when he feels the need to gaurd.
i don't mind it all that much out camping especially at night because we do live in bear and cat country. i would however like to curb the feigned aggression at people while i and or my family/camping group are there.
we have been working on this by catching him as soon as he notices a person and starts showing signs that he is ready to bark. Nytro has a really good "sit" so we are using that to our advantage. when he shows a little more interest than needed in a passer by, we have him sit. so far, working really well.
we have another camping trip scheduled this week and will be back out on the river tomorrow, and well, lots more time through summer to keep working on it.
i will try and get video of him also, just to show exactly what he is acting and looking like.

thanks again for all the input!!
