Kane's First Day ...

You guys were right -- I didn't need to worry at all. Kane was the best behaved dog there, haha.

There were only 2 other dogs there, but the instructor said to expect more dogs next week because that's usually what happens. One of the 2 dogs was a lab/golden retriever mix who was very excitable and mouthy as all get out; he was actually bruising his owner with the force of his mouthing. The other dog was a female samoyed who was better than the lab mix, but was also easily excited and liked to barkbarkbark at everything.

Compared to them, Kane was a saint, LOL. At first he was easily distracted, but I was still able to get his attention back every time and keep it for ~30 seconds. After ~10-15 mins, he realized the goal was to pay attention to me and not try to get the other dogs to play and I had his almost undivided attention after that.

The instructor ran through almost all the tests tonight just to get a feel for where the dogs were at and after that run through, I'm a lot more confident that Kane will pass his CGC than I was before we started the class, haha. He's further ahead than I thought he was.

There are three things we're going to have to work on:

1) Not greeting the friendly stranger when I'm talking to them, as he seems to think that since I'm talking to them, it's okay to greet them.

2) Passing other dogs without straining to greet them.

3) Our heeling--which is non-existent because I've never taught him that. I'm going to start it tomorrow, and teach him that when he's on a flat collar, he's to heel, and when he's on a harness, he can do whatever he wants. (Right now, he's the opposite -- he'll pull on the flat collar, walk nicely [but not heel] on the harness -- but he can't wear a harness during the test.)

He did good at all three once he calmed down and got into training mode, and he did AMAZING with heeling considering this was the first time he'd ever done it.

Another minor thing I'm nervous about is the fact that he's a total mama's boy.

As in, when the instructor took him away from me to calm him down and re-focus him (he'd growled at the Samoyed for getting in his face when the other owner accidentally dropped her leash), he refused to look at her, lol. I was only sitting 4-5 feet away from him and he purposefully kept turning his back to her no matter which way she tried to position him--he was responsive to her, looking at her whenever she clucked her tongue and called his name and willing to walk around with her. But the second she stopped and asked him to sit, he'd sit -- with his back to her, looking towards me, LOL. You could tell he was thinking: "Well, you're nice enough and you're giving me food, but I'd really like to be with my mom instead." LOL.

Sounds like he did pretty well! Good luck with the heeling, you might consider a prong collar to get the idea across. One good pop and the message gets thru a lot more clearly. Savannah's "heel" isn't anything to win an award over, but she will heel nicely whenever we need to cross a street, or when strangers are walking past. When she was used to just wearing a flat collar she refused and would just dive into the collar to get where she wanted, but a few pops with the prong, and now she's a saint(well almost) on leash! lol GOOD LUCK!

YAY sounds like he did awesome for the first day! Those are the things I think I would have to worry about too. So happy he was the best in the class.

Nice! I remember my first puppy class. Vixen just wanted to play the whole time. But when the trainer held her leash...behaved like if she was a pro.

YAY good job! One tip for the meeting a friendly stranger, when you sit him and before they approach tell him to stay. Get a really good stay and it will keep him in place.

YAY Kane sounds like you were the perfect ambassador of our breed. Good luck with the heel remember it takes time and alot of work to train sometimes but the outcome is well worth the effort.

Thanks for the tip! Kane is a soft dog, so I'm going to try the treat route first and see how that goes. He's very easily food-motivated; I was actually surprised at how focused he was on me (because of the treats) despite the other dogs and the entirely new class setting. Thanks a lot. :-)

He really did!! I was so proud of him today. :-)

Heehee, Kane actually did better with me than with the trainer--not because she wasn't knowledgeable, but mostly because whenever he was with her, he mostly wanted to be with me instead. :-)

Thanks!! I did ask him to do a stay in the friendly greeting, and he tried super-hard, but I think the new environment and the other dogs got the best of him tonight. I can't wait to see how he does next week.
