Walking your puppies..

I was wondering when everyone started walking their puppies, I ran into someone the other day saying I am walking my puppy too soon. He is 10 weeks and at the moment I only take him to the end of my road and back, which is not far at all. So I was curious to know what everyone here does, how old and how far? Thank you!

I would say within your own yard IF he has had atleast a couple rounds of shots. Further then that in more travelled areas where other dogs and animals frequent I would not venture to until all 3 rounds of shots are complete just for risk of illness like parvo and such.

After that as far as distance just go off your pup , they will slow down and give signs when they have had enough. Start of slow and short distances and work up as they age. if anything you may end up carrying him back lol. But avoid public areas with the pup until the shots are complete for sure.

Thank you for the advice, I had dogs all my life believe it or not lol, but I also used to have a HUGE amount of land that they could just run on so I never really walked them unless we went out. Now I live in town and things have changed a lot, so I very much appreciate everyone's advice here .

I started walking my puppy at around 12 weeks. She walks beautifully in the morning and when she's at a store (I walked her in at a Petsmart and she got a lot of compliments). But when she walks at night, where all the other gate-guard-dogs are out and about, it's a little tougher. She gets distracted and I end up standing in one spot for awhile to try to snap her out of it.

She had her 2nd set of shots I believe. I got her lyme vaccines because I once went hiking nearby and found ticks on my clothes. She does really well if there's no distractions, and if it's on concrete or a dirt path. When there's lawns or grass nearby, or a lot of rumbling trucks...forget about it haha. But we're still working on it.

I took risks. I think it's better safe than sorry to start walking your dog. If in a yard, use it. At least you're not taking your puppy to the dog park or anything.

Ya I'm going to stick to the yard for now, he will be 12 weeks on the 21st in which he will get his booster. He is also going to the vet on the 17th to make sure all is well and I also need to see about a Lyme shot because our area is horrible! Even though we are in town we are still right next to these woods where the ticks are so bad! And some friends of mine just suffered through their dog getting lymes disease and his liver completely shutting down. I don't want that to happen with us!

My pup (16 weeks) still needs one more shot in a couple weeks so I don't take him walking as vet advised. But I do take him in my backyard which is pretty big and just to get him used to walking on a leash.

Buddha is only 4 weeks old and I take him in the backyard on his leash as I'm trying to get him used to walking on a leash early and trying to potty train him but can't take him far since he hasn't had shots yets

I don't walk mine in public till 16 weeks after their finally boosters. The risk of disease like parvo are far to higj before then imo!

Once fully vaccinated I would walk around the block and start to go from there. Not too much to tire them out. puppies need to grow so go slow
