BullPunk77 has a spectacular aura about
reprimanding signs of da

ever since tuck and my girlfriend were attacked by a boxer (posted about it a month back) tuck has been showing more signs of da, which i expected i always heard once one fight breaks out you always have to be watching for the next. he is great with dogs he has grown up with and amazing with little molly but now when we walk him and he comes across another male dog he gets tense and sometimes growls or barks. what i have been doing to counter this is making him sit at my side away from the passing dog and trying to keep his attention on me, sometimes though there are idiot owners who let there da dog cross tucks path and bark, snap, or snarl at him which gets tuck excited and he will occasionally lunge or stand and bark back. what i want to know is how i should reprimand this behavior i have been grabbing his collar to gain his focus on me again and saying NO firmly anything else i should do?

Using treats and the "watch me" command, using the methods described in the book "Click to Calm" where a woman had such a DA dog it was nuts but after time it could walk down the street and only concentrated on her.

I use the "watch me" and cheese with Buster. It's more effective (not to mention more pleasant) when we do the click/reward method.

It takes time, but I used to yell and drag the leash, and now it looks and feels a lot better when I just click and treat, lol.

Now, at first, when you start this, you have to make sure that YOU see the other dog coming before the dog does. That way you can try and grab his attention first (at first it's more like a distraction) then after lots of practice it is a compliance. Now here and there the dog may see another dog at the same time you do and it may be too late for distraction. Don't worry about it, just keep trying.

I didn't realize what I was doing with Chalice was a watch me method. I make her sit and focus on me and wait until I see that she isn't tense and then I walk her again. In the other classes I would move off to the side and let her watch the dogs she was in a sit and if she growled I would make her look at me and not the dogs she learned fast that if she wanted to watch the other dogs she had to be good. I don't use treats with my dog I want to pay attention to me.
