House breaking a puppy

It took a couple months with Cain to get him down to no accidents. You just need to make sure your pup goes out often enough and praise like crazy when it uses the restroom outside. We do good boy go potty. At the start we went out about every 30-45 minutes. How often is yours going out? Are accidents happening around the house or in the crate?

House breaking a puppy

I have a 5 month old puppy that I got at 4 months that was not housebroken so we are basically starting from scratch. It's been a month and he does still have an accident once in awhile. We do the "go potty, good boy" when he goes outside every time, also just put bells on the door bc it seems as though his problem is communicating to us that he has to go. So we shall see how that goes. When he is not in his crate we take him out every 30-45 minutes but sometimes in between he will have an accident.

what are you doing? At that age you need to watch 100% of the time. Until your dog gets the whole need to ask to go outside that is, my boy was about 6 months old before he ASKED me to go outside. I would just take him out every 2 hours, or right after he ate and an hour after that. Then back to watching for his signal, or every 2 hours. Its the habit you are trying to form. He was crated when I could not watch him like a hawk or unable to take him out every 2 hours. Puppies in crates can not go as long as adults can even while confined and should have someone take him out after 5 hours or so til he is older.

Wow it only took me two weeks to house break my dogs.... I usually took flex out every two hours when I first got him at 8 weeks. I would tell him good boy when u went outside and would show him his accidents inside and tell him no and put him outside when he went inside. When he went in the kennel I would leave him in it for maybe 5 minutes after he did it tell him no and take him outside for a half hour. That has always been how I've seen house breaking done and its always worked quickly.

only had one dog that could not hold a bladder, and I blame it to her being fixed.
These dogs are smart and typically do not need much more than that good boy/good girl.
well put JTP

Hang in there... every dog is different.

Side note: I am almost done writing up a big potty-training article and will have it posted this weekend. Look for it late Sat night or Sun morning.

my newest one only took a week to get it down, most of my other females were easy too minus the one I bought as an adult. I find males are thicker in the head and just take longer to catch on, I honestly hated training the males. Females are so much easier. just keep on him, time it after meals and drinks 10 minutes or so and get him out and TONS of praise when he goes. Eventually he will get it.

Sorry about taking so long getting that article up, my computer crashed. I fortunately have what I have done saved in my Skydrive, but finishing it on my phone would be a nightmare. I should hopefully be able to finish it by next weekend.

I had my pit/lab @ 7 weeks old, I tried puppy pads to no avail, so I bought a nice crate and in the day time I took him out snow and all to pee and @ night I put in crate, yes he had accidents but after 2 months he learned to go to the door to say he needed to go relieve himself, again I wasn't working so I had every minute to train him!
