2 year old pit help

I just adopted my pit terrior 3 weeks ago. She is a very loving dog but im in need of some help. She always seems hyper 24/7. She has never bit a person but everybody she sees, when i walk her or if they ome into my home she acts like she wants to attack them but really she just is hyper and jumps on them.

She constantly pulls on the leash and she hates others dog and will attack them. All tips and help would be appreciated. Thank you!

welcome! The key is to tire the dog out, how much exercise are you giving your dog? I walk my boy about 3 miles and he then gets 5-8 miles on a treadmill and he could keep going. What kind of toys do you have? Do you have a yard you can set up a spring pole in? What kind of collar are you using? A tight leash build frustration and will make the situation worse. You need a loose leash. Took me about 3 days and a REALLY sore arm to break my boy of the pulling habit. The goal is to have your dog behind or beside you until they earn the right for more freedom. YOU tell the dog when to go the bathroom, YOU tell the dog when you are stopping. To get a loose leash you walk and u turn when the leash is tight, correct your dog, u turn again if she starts to pull again. She has probably pulled all her 2 years and just needs you to work with her. My boy was about 2 and a half when I taught him how to walk proper.

take a look at some of these threads, I just did a search on some recent posts that discuss some of your questions:

post up a picture of your dog, would love to see her.

Thanks for the advice! I dont really have a yard for her to run in but im getting a new house next month. I want to get her a tredmil but dont know where about to look for them. Shes a great loving and caring dog. If i could get the hyperness down and the aggression she would be the perfect family pet!

wow she really is a cutie!! Try craigslist, I got a kick ass one for $90 delivered to me! lol I have .08 acres of a yard so I know what you mean. A spring pole is portable and you can go to a park, get a long lead for your pup and attach it to a low limb of a tree.

this is my boy on it in case you haven't seen one.

I agree with Ames. Exercise, Exercise and Exercise some more. I taught my boy loose leash the same way Ames did. I use a freedom harness. Try a flirt pole also. I also bought a simple battery operated bubble machine. My boy loves chasing the bubbles and it wears him out. I am not sure where you are located but check into FreeCycle Media: About Living Stuff I got my treadmill there for free. I just had to pick it up. You have to watch for it because it is random or you can request one. People post items they plan to replace/throw away and instead of sending it into the landfills they recycle on this site to see if people are interested in them.

Everyone gave good advice as far as exercise to wear her out. As for the part I put in bold... this is called Dog Aggression, and it can be managed, but not trained out. Simply keep her away from other dogs, especially until you've gotten the leash training part down pat. These dogs don't need dog friends, and if she's already showing signs of DA, then allowing her around other dogs is just an accident waiting to happen. Both of my dogs are DA with other dogs, but are okay with each other, as long as there's no triggers around. Triggers would be food, high value treats/bones/toys, and my youngest daughter. They both regard her as "their baby" and so if she's around them both at the same time, it can result in a scrap. I've had to separate them and they very seldom get to play together anymore because I can't tell my daughter she can't play with her dogs. So, she gets one on one play time with them. Makes for a safer, happier home for us all.

Thank you for someone keying on this point...!!
KingMia,
While it is true your pup is very loving, you are now in possession of a powerful animal. With the jumping on people thing.. You need to not only start training that out, you need to become the dominant leader in your "pack",, You must become the Alpha. Then, correct the jumping immediately! Leash the pup for a min when someone comes in,, BE IN CHARGE!
On the issue of constantly pulling on the lease and wanting to "get at" every dog. Well, YEP, that is a trait and now YOU are responsible for the control of your animal at ALL times!!
Dog aggression is a very prominent trait and one that some just cant handle.
Tips to controlling it is simply being leashed at all times out of the home, and being in leadership of your dog. There are quite a few of us here that have a pup we would literally have to pick up and carry home, without that the leash will never stop pulling toward the other dog.
Tiring your dog is key to keeping them relaxed and not zooming around 24/7, there are lots of ways to do this, just study and find what works for you.

Ask anything you want to know about anytime , and

My original post was in August, and I have to come back to this and state that things have changed, and my dogs can NO LONGER be around each other period. They are permanently on rotation. Again, it can be managed, but the key is to knowing when to step in in order to prevent something happening.

Crate/rotate is a lifestyle change but manageable if you are willing to work at it. You can also muzzle your dog while in public. They now have all types of muzzles that do not appear so harsh looking. Mine is a grey hound muzzle and it come in colors. I also have a mesh muzzle. Never leave a muzzle on him when not being supervised. Crate your dog before people come in your house and let them settle down. Bring your pup out on a leash or tether him to you. Place him in sit stay until he has relaxed with the visitors. Even if you have to provide him a filled kong or a antler. Do not untether him from you until he learns appropriate greetings of people.
